AHN Launches Web-Based Star Ratings, Reviews for Employed Physicians

New Feature on AHN.org Helps Patients Choose the Best Health Care Providers for Their Individual Needs and Preferences

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – As part of its commitment to transparency and providing patients with the ability to choose the best caregivers for their individual needs, Allegheny Health Network (AHN) is now posting verified star ratings and patient comments for all AHN physicians on its web site, www.ahn.org.

The AHN physician ratings are compiled by Press Ganey, a leading national health care industry analyst that pioneered the health care performance improvement movement more than 33 years ago and works with more than 33,000 health care facilities nationwide. The ratings come from surveys that are mailed and emailed to patients following office visits with doctors.

“From same-day appointments, to our 24/7 Nurse Line, to the many new facilities we are opening throughout western Pennsylvania, AHN is focused on ensuring that patients have convenient access to the health care services that they desire and need,” said Cynthia Hundorfean, President and CEO, AHN. “The new physician star rating system on our web site is further evidence of that commitment, and a feature that we believe will empower patients to be even better advocates for their health.”

To access the AHN physician ratings, patients can visit the Find a Doctor section at ahn.org and type in any physician’s name. The star ratings are visible on the doctor’s main page, and patients can click on “Ratings and Comments” for more information. They can also browse physicians in a particular specialty by clicking on Specialties and Services, finding the desired specialty, and clicking on “Our Doctors” on the left hand side of the page.

“Today’s consumers turn to the Internet for information and insight on everything from restaurants to home improvement contractors. But the stakes are higher for consumers trying to decide to whom they should entrust their health care,” said Eugene Scioscia, MD, AHN’s Chief Patient Experience Officer. “That’s why we turned to Press Ganey to provide a level of trust and reliability that’s not always present in other online ratings.”

AHN earned Press Ganey’s Seal of Integrity, which validates the reliability of AHN’s data transparency program and commitment to collecting and openly sharing feedback from patients. It also assures providers, physicians and patients that physician performance ratings are scientifically rigorous and adhere to the most exacting data standards. (For more information on Press Ganey’s Seal of Integrity, visit doctors.ahn.org/about-reviews).

Patients who are searching for a doctor can be assured that the reviews are written by actual patients. Likewise, patients filling out the forms can be assured that their responses are anonymous. Physicians do not know which patients submitted reviews. The comments are reviewed so that anything that contains protected patient health information, or is libelous, is removed; however those patients’ numerical ratings are still factored into the physicians’ ratings.

The star ratings are on a scale from 1 (worst) to 5 (best), and are based on at least 30 responses. The average AHN physician rating is 4.7.

“A successful doctor-patient relationship depends on a number of factors that are different for each individual. We hope our patients use these ratings as one tool to help them select the best physician for their own needs, while understanding that they are not necessarily the final word,” Dr. Scioscia said. “Traditional criteria for selecting a physician – word of mouth, personal experiences, ease of access to the physician’s offices – are still extremely valuable and important.”

“As more consumers turn to online physician reviews when selecting a care provider, health care organizations are implementing strategies to ensure the ratings they post are objective, standardized evaluations of their patients’ experiences,” said Patrick T. Ryan, CEO, Press Ganey. “Allegheny Health Network has demonstrated its commitment to delivering an accurate representation of provider performance to help patients make informed decisions about their care, and we are pleased to recognize AHN with our Seal of Integrity.”
