Elizabeth wanted to have a natural childbirth but was expecting some push back based on stories she had heard from moms who had delivered at other hospitals in town. But when she arrived at West Penn Hospital to give birth to baby Peter in early October, she says the nurses and doctors could not have been more supportive of her choices.
“I was so thrilled I was able to have a natural childbirth – no one ever suggested an epidural or tried to convince me otherwise. The birthing suite was beautiful, and it was so nice to be able to dim the lights, play music, and make it like a little sanctuary. We found out later the L&D unit was full that day, and my husband and I were shocked to hear this because we felt like we were the only patients! I never felt rushed. It was so nice to spend time with the baby and we never felt like they needed to flip the room. After Peter was born, we received a birthday card signed by the staff and a birthday cake. We were so touched, and when telling friends about our experience, we realized we were very lucky and this is not the standard everywhere!”
