Research

Research

The AHN Internal Medicine Residency Program recognizes that research and scholarship are integral to developing the both the minds and careers of our learners, especially during their residency.

Whether writing a medical case report or participating in clinical or translational research, our program fully supports and encourages our residents’ pursuit of scholarly endeavors through a strong mentoring program, travel funding, elective time, and dedicated support resources.

Research Support

Our program has aggressively expanded research and scholarship among our residents and, over the past two academic years, has increased scholarly output by over 60 percent!

Leading this initiative is the Internal Medicine Residency Program Research Committee, chaired by Tarun Sharma, MD, and composed of MDs and PhDs who have a passion for research and a drive to see our residents excel. The Research Committee facilitates collaboration between residents, fellows, and faculty across the entire Department of Medicine, including the subspecialties, to ensure that any resident can to do research with a mentor from one of the subspecialties during their training.

Residents in our program can take full advantage of the following resources:

  • Elective Research Time - Residents may pursue a month of protected time away from rotations to complete key research-oriented tasks.
  • Biostatistical Support - Residents have access to a dedicated biostatistician to aid in study design and the interpretation of their data.
  • Travel Grants - Residents can apply for dedicated funds to help defray the cost of travel and conference expenses when presenting their work.
  • Research Lecture Series - This monthly collaborative discussion series is created by residents and faculty for residents, and has the practical goal of helping residents complete research during their residency here at AHN.
  • Academic Support - Residents can count on support from a dedicated core of experienced writers and educators in the form of reviewing and critiquing their work, offering revisions and editorial assistance, and staging mock presentations of their work.
  • Research and Scholarship Day -Medicine residents have the opportunity to present their work at this internal poster competition. In addition to circulating their work and networking across the Department of Medicine, residents and fellows compete for prizes.
