Chemotherapy and Targeted Therapy Standards of Practice Modules 1-8 is designed to provide all licensed competent practitioners involved with the ordering, mixing, administration, management, and/or handling of chemotherapy and targeted therapy agents a comprehensive review of the new national guidelines for standards for practice. The new guidelines that will be reviewed were developed by the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) and the Oncology Nursing Society (ONS). These institutions have developed 31 standards encompassing seven domains:

  1. review of clinical information and selection of a treatment regimen
  2. treatment planning and informed consent
  3. ordering of treatment
  4. drug preparation
  5. assessment of treatment compliance
  6. administration and monitoring
  7. assessment of response

Learning Objectives

  • Review the standards for training, staffing, and competency related to the administration of chemotherapy and targeted therapy agents.
  • Identify the prescriber’s role in the planning and documentation of chemotherapy and targeted therapy agents.
  • Discuss the steps in the consent and education process of chemotherapy and targeted therapy agents.
  • Describe the ordering process of chemotherapy and targeted therapy agents.
  • Explain the mixing steps and processes of chemotherapy and targeted therapy agents.
  • Review the procedure for chemotherapy and targeted therapy administration, including the various routes and rationale for selection.
  • Paraphrase the steps in the administration process of chemotherapy and targeted therapy agents.
  • Summarize the required documentation upon completion of administration of chemotherapy and targeted therapy agents.
  • Give examples of how to manage a hypersensitivity and/or anaphylactic reaction to antineoplastic agents.
  • Identify drugs that can cause tissue necrosis.
  • Outline the management strategies of an extravasation procedure including correct antidote selection.
  • Report correct forms for documentation of an extravasation.
  • Indicate the process for monitoring and assessment of patients receiving chemotherapy and targeted therapy agents.
  • Define specific biohazardous agents.
  • Describe the proper donning of personal protective equipment.
  • Discuss the pertinent aspects of safe handling of patients receiving chemotherapy and targeted therapy agents.
  • Explain the steps to handle a spill of chemotherapy and targeted therapy agents.
  • Expected Outcomes:
  • Confidently provide safe and consistent ordering, preparation, handling, administration, and disposal of hazardous medications
