Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University
Undergraduate Medical Education at Allegheny Health Network
Since 2000, Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University (LKSOM) has had an affiliate site in Pittsburgh, Pa., where third-year and fourth-year medical students of LKSOM in Philadelphia, Pa., can complete their clinical rotations.
In addition, third- and fourth-year students from TUSM and fourth-year students from other medical schools may apply to complete elective clinical rotations at the Pittsburgh site.
The Pittsburgh TUSM site offers an unparalleled experience in the region’s newly formed Allegheny Health Network (AHN), a unified healthcare system dedicated to providing affordable, exceptional care to people in our communities. AHN’s patient-centered approach to care means a greater focus on coordinated health and wellness services as well as being accountable and responsive to patients from start to finish. AHN has an urban, academic and community focus that is establishing delivery models in four regions with 200 locations; 2,800 employed/aligned physicians, residents and fellows; and 17,500 employees.
Key Temple medical student training facilities are AHN’s two academic medical centers in Pittsburgh - Allegheny General Hospital (AGH) and West Penn Hospital (WPH), which serve as regional resources for bone marrow transplant, burn care, cancer, cardiovascular, emergency medicine, neurosciences, orthopedics, transplant, trauma, and women’s health. Family medicine rotations are at Forbes Hospital in Monroeville, Pa., with emergency care, primary stroke certification, obstetrical care and numerous other specialties. AHN’s STAR (simulation) Center located at WPH is a ‘virtual hospital’ with the latest SimMan and other lifelike manikins that is used extensively by healthcare students and professionals for preclinical training, practice, review, and testing/certification.
AGH and WPH have been educating physicians for more than 150 years and sponsor more than 40 residency and fellowship programs and have clinical affiliations with Drexel University College of Medicine and Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM) as well as with Temple, offering an exceptional clinical and didactic experience for students at all levels of medical education.
AHN also has a Group Purchasing Organization and Distribution Center; 3 Health + Wellness pavilions plus 1 additional pavilion under construction; Allegheny-Singer Research Institute for clinical, translational and basic research; the Disruptive Health Technology Institute (DHTI) in conjunction with Carnegie Mellon University; and 1 Captive Insurance Company.
Students are given opportunities to pursue research, undertake scholarly endeavors, and participate in residency interest groups in Internal Medicine, Anesthesiology and Emergency Medicine and in off-campus activities such as volunteering at homeless shelters and clinics.
