Monday, April 22, 2019
HARRISON TWP. – Allegheny Health Network’s Allegheny Valley Hospital (AVH) will mark its 110th year of providing expert, personalized care to Alle-Kiski Valley-area residents with a series of community-focused events scheduled for the week of May 6-10.
The week’s festivities will include a community night with kids’ activities and a big-band concert, a stork club recognition for people who were born at AVH, and a 1950s prices throwback day in the AVH cafeteria.
“Throughout its 110-year history, AVH has stayed focused on providing expert, compassionate care close to home to our neighbors throughout the Alle-Kiski Valley,” said Jeff Carlson, acting president and CEO. “Our anniversary celebration is dedicated to the people who have made AVH’s long and successful history possible – our patients, our employees, our auxiliary members and volunteers, and our alumni, from former employees to Citizens School of Nursing graduates.
“We hope all local residents can join in this celebration of AVH and its strong connections to the local community,” Carlson said.
The events are:
Monday, May 6 – Stork Club Celebration
All those who were born at AVH are invited to claim a pin marking their membership in the “AVH Stork Club” and sign a registry in the hospital lobby. Cupcakes will be served in the AVH cafeteria from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. and from 4-6 p.m.
Tuesday, May 7 – Cafeteria throwback to 1950s prices
Patients and visitors can enjoy 1950s throwback prices for selected items at the AVH cafeteria. Coffee, coke, candy bars and gum will be available for a nickel apiece, and a ham and cheese sandwich for a quarter. Breakfast items are available from 6:30 to 10 a.m., lunch from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., and dinner from 4 to 6 p.m. Milkshakes (20 cents) will be available from 2-3 p.m.
Wednesday, May 8 – Alumni Day
AVH Retirees and graduates of Allegheny Valley Hospital School of Nursing and other AVH schools are invited to an open house with lunch from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Charles Young Conference Center on AVH’s third floor. Thursday, May 9 – Auxiliary and Volunteer recognition
AVH’s Auxiliary has raised nearly $4 million over the years to fund new equipment and renovations at AVH. Leadership will also pass out small tokens of gratitude to volunteers and auxiliary members between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.
Friday, May 10 – Community Night with Big Band Music and Kids’ Events
The final community celebration on the front lawn at AVH from 4-8 p.m. will include food trucks, dancing with big band music provided by Murphy’s Music (6-8 p.m.), emergency equipment that kids can explore with the “Touch a Truck” program, horse-drawn carriage rides down Carlisle Street, face painting, balloon art, teddy bear clinics where children (or adults) can spruce up their “patients,” and character appearances from Fairytale Princess Visits. Free teddy bears will be provided to the first 110 children to attend. The Pirate Parrot will also attend and a Pirates ticket raffle will be held.
AVH began in 1909 as a three-story frame dwelling on Second Avenue in Tarentum and is now a 190-bed medical facility in Harrison Township serving the Alle-Kiski Valley and beyond. In recent years, AVH has renovated its emergency department and expanded several important services, including orthopaedics and physical therapy. Most recently, AVH received advanced certification for primary stroke centers from The Joint Commission, recognizing its capabilities for and commitment to providing the highest quality care to patients affected by stroke.
