AHN Appoints Vicenta C. Gaspar-Yoo, MD, MBA, CHCQM-PHYADV, President of Allegheny Valley Hospital

Thursday, June 13, 2019

HARRISON TWP., PA -- Allegheny Health Network (AHN) today announced the appointment of Vicenta C. Gaspar-Yoo, MD, MBA, CHCQM, as President of Allegheny Valley Hospital (AVH).  Dr. Gaspar-Yoo will assume her new role with the organization on July 1, 2019.

Dr. Gaspar-Yoo comes to AVH from University Hospitals Health System (UH) in Cleveland, where she most recently served in dual capacities as System Physician Advisor and System Physician Lead for HRM Observation Improvement.  Prior to these roles, Dr. Gaspar-Yoo was the Chief Medical Officer for UH’s Bedford and Richmond Hospitals.

During her time at UH, Dr. Gaspar-Yoo has been instrumental in helping to advance the success of the twelve-hospital system’s clinical and business operations, including in critical areas such as quality, safety, patient satisfaction, physician recruitment and relations, care modeling and revenue cycle management.

Cynthia Hundorfean, President and Chief Executive Officer of AHN, said Dr. Gaspar-Yoo’s depth of experience as a physician and a health care administrator makes her uniquely qualified to lead AVH at a transformative time in the hospital’s history and as the industry transitions to a value based model.

AVH recently celebrated its 110th anniversary as a vital resource for the people of Harrison Township and surrounding communities.  Over the past few years, AHN has invested more than $7 million in improvements at the hospital, including renovated orthopedic, neurosurgical and inpatient rehab units, a state-of-the-art linear accelerator for cancer treatment, a new CT scanner, and other improvements designed to enhance patient access and convenience.

“AVH and the health of the Alle-Kiski community are incredibly important to our Network, and we are excited to have such an extremely talented and accomplished physician executive join our leadership team in this critical role,” Hundorfean said. “We look forward to the continued evolution, growth and success of AVH as the community’s leading provider of comprehensive, high-quality healthcare services under her direction.”

Dr. Gaspar-Yoo is the fourth physician hospital president appointed by AHN since 2016, joining Christopher Clark, DO;  Mark Rubino, MD, and Jeffrey Cohen, MD, who currently serve as President of Saint Vincent Hospital, Forbes Hospital and Allegheny General Hospital, respectively. Three of the networks other hospitals, Canonsburg, Jefferson and West Penn, are led by nursing executives Louise Urban and Ron Andro.

This Network’s clinician-led model mirrors that established by some of the nation’s preeminent health care institutions, including the Cleveland Clinic and Mayo Clinic, and is viewed as a leadership structure that promotes high-quality, patient-centered care.

“It is an honor to become part of AHN and Highmark Health at this time of remarkable growth and innovation for the health system,” Dr. Gaspar-Yoo said. “AHN and Highmark are at the forefront of a transformative, value and quality-driven movement in health care that is leading to better integration and coordination of services, more convenient community access to care, superior quality and greater affordability. I look forward to working with all of the exceptional caregivers and volunteers at AVH to help shape and achieve that vision for our patients in the Alle-Kiski Valley.”

Dr. Gaspar-Yoo received her M.D. degree from the University of the East Medical Center, College of Medicine in Manila, Philippines, and completed her post-graduate training with an internship at Crozer-Chester Medical Center near Philadelphia, and a Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation residency at UPMC Presbyterian. She later earned an MBA from Case Western Reserve University’s Weatherhead School of Management.

Prior to her work with University Hospitals, she held several clinical and leadership posts at Firelands Regional Medical Center in Sandusky, Ohio, including Director of Clinical Innovation and Program Development, and President and Chairman of the Physician-Hospital Organization.
