Forbes Hospital Breaks Ground on New Perioperative Center

Monday, October 23, 2017

$16 Million facility to house numerous services designed to better accommodate growing patient volumes

MONROEVILLE, Pa.– Officials from Forbes Hospital, Allegheny Health Network (AHN) and Highmark Health will join elected officials and other community leaders  today to break ground on a new 50,000-square-foot perioperative center at the hospital.  The facility, which is scheduled to open in December 2018, will include a 16,000-square-foot new structure on the Forbes campus and offer access to a range of advanced clinical programs and services.

A groundbreaking celebration will take place at 3:30 p.m. at the new perioperative center location, which is adjacent to the hospital’s surgery center patient entrance.
According to Mark Rubino, MD, President of Forbes Hospital, the new perioperative center will optimize the experiences of patients undergoing surgical and non-surgical procedures at the hospital by expanding and enhancing the resources available to them and by advancing a more efficient and effective care delivery model.  The facility will accomplish those goals in a number of ways, including:

  • doubling the capacity of Forbes’ Post-Acute Care Unit (PACU)
  • adding 50% more capacity to the hospital’s cardiac procedure unit, allowing patients to  prepare for and recover from procedures at a single location
  • opening a new, state-of-the-art electrophysiology (EP) Lab for the treatment of heart rhythm disorders
  • expanding and upgrading the hospital’s Gastrointestinal (GI) Lab adjacent to the hospital’s Ambulatory Surgery Center, creating a common location for all same-day procedures
  • increasing the capacity and technological sophistication of Forbes’ central sterile processing department to support the hospital’s growing procedure volumes

“As Monroeville’s leading provider of comprehensive health care services, our volumes continue to grow as we introduce new and more sophisticated capabilities to our clinical and surgical programs,” said Dr. Rubino. “This substantial investment in the hospital will significantly strengthen our ability to provide exceptional care and optimize outcomes for every patient who comes through our doors.”

Forbes received state grant funding of $1.4 million to help finance the $16 million perioperative center.  Last week Highmark Health and AHN announced plans to invest more than $1 billion over the next four to five years to enhance access to care through new facility construction and expansion and renovation of existing hospitals.
