Network to Serve as a Demonstration Site for New and Emerging Technologies in Radiation Oncology

PITTSBURGH, PA – Allegheny Health Network (AHN) Cancer Institute has been named the first Elekta Center of Distinction, a designation that recognizes AHN’s leading expertise and experience in the treatment of cancer patients with the full range of advanced Elekta technologies.

As a Center of Distinction, AHN Cancer Institute will serve as a reference and demonstration-site for other cancer care centers exploring the use of Elekta technologies as well as a collaborator in the development of future innovations.

AHN Cancer Institute offers patients a full range of Elekta cancer fighting technologies, including Leksell Gamma Knife® Icon radiosurgery system, Brachytherapy Flexitron® afterloader, Infinity™ and VersaHD™ advanced linear accelerators, Monaco® treatment planning system, MOSAIQ® OIS and Elekta Unity MR-Linac system.

AHN Cancer Institute has also joined the Elekta MR-linac Consortium, a global collaboration among leading cancer care centers and industry partners from the US, Canada, Europe, and Asia - including MD Anderson, Princess Margaret, Oxford and others - that is developing the clinical regimens and workflows to optimize the use of Elekta Unity in specific tumor anatomies. This includes advanced radiation therapies such as cardiac ablation therapy with highly focused radiation treatment to the heart for hard-to-treat arrhythmias, and precise, accurate targeting of radiation therapy to the brain, spine and body that can reduce the duration of treatments from 6-8 weeks to 1-2 weeks.

“This important collaboration with leading industry, clinical and academic experts from around the world further advances our personalized medicine, immunotherapy, research, and education programs as we continue to integrate clinical, genomic, and payer functions and data to improve and transform healthcare outcomes,” said David Parda, MD, Chair, AHN Cancer Institute. “We are honored by this designation that recognizes that our cancer institute and radiation oncology teams are operating at the highest levels of leadership, expertise, collaboration and innovation. We look forward to hosting educating representatives of other cancer care centers throughout the United States about Elekta’s outstanding solutions for cancer patients.”

AHN Cancer Institute employs a multi-disciplinary, patient-centered model of care that prioritizes effective communication, treatment coordination and engagement with patients and families as partners in care. The Institute’s radiation oncology program is one of the largest in the country accredited through the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) Accreditation Program for Excellence, a rigorous, voluntary process in which a center’s policies and procedures are evaluated using consensus-based standards for radiation oncology practice.

“Over the past five years, Elekta and AHN have worked collaboratively not only to bring precision radiation medicine to patients in Pennsylvania, but also to train clinicians from around the country on how to optimize clinical use of Elekta innovations to improve patient care and to conduct clinical research that enables new treatment paradigms,” said Peter Gaccione, Executive Vice President, Region North and Latin America. “We are very pleased to recognize AHN as the first Elekta Center of Distinction.”
