AHN Center for Reproductive Medicine Cited as Nursing Center of Excellence

Friday, March 2, 2018

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Allegheny Health Network Center for Reproductive Medicine has been named a Nursing Center of Excellence by the American Society for Reproductive Medicine, a nationally and internationally recognized leader for multidisciplinary information, education, advocacy and standards in the field of reproductive medicine.

AHN is one of only 42 fertility practices nationwide, including four in Pennsylvania and two in the Pittsburgh region, to be recognized as a Nursing Center of Excellence.

At a Nursing Center of Excellence, at least 50 percent of the practice’s staff must be experienced in reproductive endocrinology, and have completed additional training in the field through the ASRM.

“Our nurses have spent many hours educating themselves and preparing for the certification course. This is a wonderful accomplishment for our center,” said Lori Homa, MD, Medical Director of the AHN Center for Reproductive Medicine.

“Our nurses play a key role in patient education and satisfaction. They talk with patients daily and guide them through their treatment cycle, as dictated by the physician.  With the continuous advances in reproductive medicine, it is critical to stay abreast of new technology and treatments. The ongoing training to maintain the certification keeps our nurses on the forefront of advancements in this field.”

“The work of AHN’s Center for Reproductive Medicine is emblematic of AHN’s women’s care, combining cutting-edge expertise with compassionate, individualized care,” said Allan Klapper, MD, Chair, Obstetrics and Gynecology, AHN. “Our physicians and nurses work in concert with the patients’ medical team to help them achieve their dreams of a family using the most advanced in vitro fertilization (IVF) lab technology.”

“AHN nurses put the patient at the center of everything they do, and that commitment is reflected in this accomplishment by the nurses of the Center for Reproductive Medicine,” said Claire M. Zangerle, DNP, MSN, MBA, RN, Chief Nurse Executive, AHN. “I commend the Center’s nurses for continuing to grow and take on new challenges while providing daily compassionate, expert care to patients.”

In addition to Dr. Homa, reproductive endocrinologists Anthony Wakim, MD, and Fabiola Balmir, MD, see patients in locations throughout the region: McCandless Township, Bethel Park, Wexford, Penn Hills, Squirrel Hill and Sewickley.

In addition to IVF, the AHN Center for Reproductive Medicine offers preimplantation genetic testing, intrauterine insemination, sperm testing, surrogacy services and tubal reversal surgery, working with individual patients to tailor a treatment that matches their goals and boosts their chances of success. The Center also has special expertise in the surgical treatment of uterine abnormalities, fibroids, endometriosis, polyps, and other issues affecting the reproductive organs, from routine to complex cases.
