Allegheny Health Network Recognizes National Donate Life Month
Wednesday, March 27, 2019
PITTSBURGH, Pa -- Allegheny Health Network will recognize National Donate Life Month by hosting a series of events across its seven hospitals in April, including Allegheny General Hospital (AGH), Allegheny Valley, Canonsburg, Forbes, Jefferson, Saint Vincent and West Penn. The events will pay tribute to those who have given the gift of life while also encouraging staff, patients and visitors to learn more about organ donation and how to become a registered organ donor.
According to the Center for Organ Recovery & Education (CORE), more than 100,000 men, women and children await lifesaving organ transplants with another person added to the waiting list every ten minutes.
In 2018, AHN’s commitment to organ, tissue, and cornea donation resulted in nearly 100 lives being saved by organs donated at its hospitals. Additionally, more than 9,500 lives were improved because of the generosity of tissue donors from AHN hospitals and more than 100 AHN donors provided the gift of sight through corneal transplantation.
“Our hospitals have a longstanding legacy of providing exceptional care, comfort and hope for those in need of advanced health services. Donate Life Month is an important time for our Network to come together in raising awareness about organ donation and in paying tribute to those who have made the incredibly generous decision to be an organ donor ,” said Cynthia Hundorfean, president and CEO at Allegheny Health Network. “It’s also an opportunity to recognize all of the amazing transplant professionals at AHN and across the country for the remarkable work they do every day to make a difference in the lives of so many people.”
Among the month’s highlights will be flag-raising ceremonies at each hospital where transplant patients and donor families come together to share their journey. On April 2, hospitals will recognize “Step Up and Give a Hand Day,” by giving employees and visitors a chance to pledge their support with a colorful handprint display.
On April 12, each hospital across AHN, as well as its parent company, Highmark Health, will unite for “National Donate Life Blue and Green Day.” All employees will be asked to wear blue and green attire to show their support for organ donation, and the city skyline will be illuminated with blue and green lights including the Highmark Health spire at Fifth Avenue Place.
