JEFFERSON HILLS, Pa. – Jefferson Hospital and Allegheny Health Network (AHN) have donated $20,000 to the Borough of Jefferson Hills Police Department to install a camera system in April at the intersection of State Route 51 and Coal Valley Road in Jefferson Hills. This donation will be used for the Allegheny County District Attorney’s Office initiative for a comprehensive video surveillance system in the region.
The cameras will include both overview cameras as well as License Plate Recognition (LPR) cameras and will be installed in all directions. The overview cameras are used to video vehicles, while the LPR cameras are used to capture and record license plate data of all vehicles passing through the intersection.
“By having both these types of cameras in place, officers essentially sync up the video from one, to the data from the other, to identify criminal suspects passing through or fleeing from a crime,” said Jefferson Hills Police Chief Gene Roach.
These same camera systems are in place in other locations throughout the region and have proven to be an invaluable tool for law enforcement officers in the area. The JHPD has used the other cameras/LPR’s in nearby jurisdictions to assist in solving crimes, With the soon to be installed cameras at this Route 51 location in Jefferson Hills, the regional video surveillance system continues to develop even further in the region.
“Jefferson Hospital and Allegheny Health Network are not only committed to providing the best possible care for our patients, we also always strive to be good community partners in the places we call home,” said Louise Urban, President & CEO, Jefferson Hospital. “We hope the installation of a traffic surveillance camera – particularly at this busy intersection just down the hill from our hospital – will help make the Jefferson Hills community healthier and safer.”
