AHN Cancer Institute - Butler Opens, Bringing Comprehensive Cancer Care into the Community

Friday, March 8, 2019

$21 Million, 34,000 Square Foot Facility Offers One-Stop Access to Advanced Clinical and Support Services for Butler-Area Cancer Patients

BUTLER, Pa.Allegheny Health Network (AHN) today cut the ribbon to a new, comprehensive, cancer center that brings the world-class care of the AHN Cancer Institute to the Butler community.

Centrally located in the Pullman Center Business Park, AHN Cancer Institute - Butler is part of a $300 million investment in cancer services by Highmark Health and AHN that includes a new academic cancer center at Allegheny General Hospital, and multiple new community-based cancer treatment facilities.

“At AHN, we are building the future of healthcare, with the patient at the very center of every investment we make. From same-day appointments to community based hospitals and cancer centers, our focus is on improving the patient experience at every touchpoint,” said Cynthia Hundorfean, AHN’s President and Chief Executive Officer. “AHN Cancer Institute-Butler provides this community with access to high-quality, comprehensive cancer services under one roof and in a location that is most convenient to our patients and their families.”

As the U.S. population continues to grow older and more diverse, the number of cancer diagnoses is rising. About 1.7 million new cancer cases – 80,000 in Pennsylvania alone - are expected to be diagnosed in 2019, according to the American Cancer Society. In addition, there are nearly 17 million cancer survivors in the United States today, with that number expected to rise to nearly 22 million by 2029, according to the National Cancer Institute. The need for better cancer screening, treatment and surveillance will increase accordingly.

“Investing in more services to care for our patients closer to where they live is the foundation of our commitment to addressing the escalating cancer care needs of the western Pennsylvania community in the most effective and affordable manner, today and in the future,” said David Parda, MD, Chair, AHN Cancer Institute.

“We are bringing the same cancer fighting capabilities that we offer at our urban, flagship hospitals to local communities because we believe that patients have better outcomes overall – clinically, financially and emotionally – when they have better access to the care they need, regardless of where they live,” Dr. Parda said.

Designed to support a patient-centered care model, AHN’s new 34,000 square foot, two-story cancer center provides a wide array of clinical and support services, including state-of-the-art radiation oncology capabilities, medical oncology and infusion therapy, nutritional counseling, social services and access to cancer clinical trials.  The center’s décor uses natural light and soft colors to create a calming atmosphere for patients and their families, with quiet exam rooms and comfortable waiting areas.

AHN Cancer Institute- Butler employs approximately 60 people.

The Pullman Business Park location was chosen for its proximity to the greatest number of patients, availability of parking, access to high-volume traffic routes, and the potential for future expansion, if needed.

AHN Cancer Institute – Butler is the network’s second new community cancer center to open this year, following the opening of the AHN Forbes Outpatient Center in Monroeville last month. New centers in Erie, Westmoreland and Beaver counties will open later this year.

AHN is also building a new Academic Cancer Center at Allegheny General Hospital that will serve as a base for education, research, clinical trials, and care coordination among experts throughout the community cancer network and academic centers at AGH, West Penn Hospital, and Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center.  AHN’s expanded relationship with Johns Hopkins offers patients at all 23 AHN Cancer Institute treatment locations throughout the region streamlined access to second opinions, clinical trials, novel treatments and technologies.
