AHN Cancer Institute – Somerset Adds Advanced Technologies to Meet Local Patients’ Needs in a Community Setting

Tuesday, April 24, 2018

SOMERSET, PA. – AHN Cancer Institute – Somerset has reopened with cutting-edge radiation oncology technology that will allow Somerset area residents to access big-city oncology care in a close-to-home setting.

The center, located at 314 S. Kimberly Avenue in Somerset, is Somerset County’s only full-service cancer treatment facility, offering medical oncology as well as radiation treatments. Only patients with the most rare and complex cancers would need to travel outside the area to receive treatment.

“At Allegheny Health Network Cancer Institute, we pride ourselves on offering community-based care that is state-of-the-art,” said David Parda, MD, Chair, AHN Cancer Institute. “Cancer patients should not have to travel long distances to get treatment. The easier it is for patients to access care, the more likely they are to finish their treatment plans and have the best possible outcome.”

The new additions at Somerset include:

Versa HD, a highly versatile radiotherapy treatment that adapts to different body types or complexity of cases, giving doctors the flexibility to treat a wider variety of patients.

SIEMENS SOMATOM Confidence, a CT scanner that lets doctors view body tissues in 20 layers of vivid detail.

Monaco, a high-precision radiation treatment offering gold-standard accuracy, allowing tumors to be precisely targeted, avoiding damage to surrounding tissues.

MOSAIQ Oncology Information System, giving clinicians quick access to information that enhances planning, safety and quality.

Overall, the new technologies allow faster and more accurate delivery of radiation to patients, decreased treatment time, convenient access to CT scanning and better imaging to target tumors more precisely.

The updates at AHN Cancer Institute – Somerset add new capabilities in stereotactic body radiosurgery (SBRT) and volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT), both highly effective and accurate radiation therapies.

Radiation oncology at AHN Cancer Institute – Somerset is under the direction of Dennis Ulewicz, MD, and medical oncology is led by Aiman Daghestani, MD.
