Allegheny General, Forbes and West Penn Hospitals Recognized as Most Wired® 2017 Winners by AHA

Monday, July 17, 2017

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – Allegheny General Hospital (AGH), Forbes Hospital and West Penn Hospital, all part of Allegheny Health Network (AHN), have been recognized as Most Wired® 2017 winners by the American Hospital Association’s (AHA) Health Forum.

With over 39 percent of all hospitals in the United States represented, the industry leading Most Wired® survey is used as a barometer to gauge IT adoption in health systems across the country.

Forbes Hospital, a 315-bed facility located in the eastern suburbs of Pittsburgh, was the first of AHN’s eight hospitals to implement the Epic electronic health records system in 2015. Since then, the platform has been launched at the Network’s two largest hospitals in the city, Allegheny General and West Penn, as well as across most of the system’s employed physician practices and at several of its large outpatient centers. Plans are now underway to launch Epic at AHN’s Jefferson Hospital in Jefferson Hills, Pa., later this summer and at its Saint Vincent Hospital in Erie, Pa., in early 2018.

“We are using a variety of tools and emerging technologies to improve patient engagement, experience, and safety,” said Robert White, MD, Chief Medical Information Officer at AHN. “We’ve recently implemented MyChart Bedside, which is an inpatient-facing patient engagement tool. We’re also taking advantage of telestroke, teleconferencing, video visits and eVisits, and same-day patient visits.”

Some of the notable results of this year’s Most Wired® survey:
- 40 percent of hospitals are offering virtual physician visits
- 68 percent are allowing prescription refill requests on mobile devices
- 62 percent are adding data reported by patients to their electronic health record
- 76 percent provide secure messaging through mobile devices with clinicians

“The Most Wired hospitals are using every available technology option to create more ways to reach their patients in order to provide access to care,” said AHA President and CEO Rick Pollack. “They are transforming care delivery, investing in new delivery models in order to improve quality, provide access and control costs.”

According to Dr. White, AHN intends to continue breaking new ground with its technology solutions. “We are currently using technology to decrease the regulatory burden and exploring how predictive analytics can help us further drive improved performance and greater efficiencies in patient care.”
