AHN Cancer Institute Hosts Free Cancer Screening in Monroeville

MONROEVILLE, Pa. – Allegheny Health Network (AHN) Cancer Institute will host its second monthly cancer screening of 2023 on Saturday, Feb. 18, at the AHN Forbes Cancer Institute, 2626 Haymaker Road, Monroeville, PA, 15146. The screenings are free and open to both AHN and non-AHN patients. Health insurance is not required.

Registration for the Forbes event is now open and closes on Feb. 10. Reservations must be made by calling 412-359-6665.

“February is National Cancer Prevention Awareness month, which serves as an important reminder to be a vigilant advocate for your own health,” said James Betler, DO, AHN radiation oncologist, system director for the Southern Region and Oncology Care Coordination, and director of AHN’s screening program. “A key component of prevention is knowing the risk factors of the various types of cancers, knowing what symptoms to look for, and completing regular screenings when eligible.”

Screenings for the following cancers will be available: breast cancer (for ages 40+), cervical cancer (ages 21-65), colorectal cancers (age 45-75), head and neck cancers (age 18+), lung cancer (ages 50-80 with a history of smoking), prostate cancer (ages 45+), and skin cancer (ages 18+).

Through the numerous Western Pennsylvania screening events held in 2022 by the AHN Cancer Institute, 1,628 free screenings were conducted, and 381 abnormalities were detected.

“Early detection through our free screening program has saved many lives, and we strongly encourage those who meet the age and risk criteria to take advantage of these opportunities,” Dr. Betler said.

Additional screenings are to be scheduled throughout the year at a variety of locations, including the newly renovated Richard J. Laube Cancer Center at Armstrong County Memorial Hospital, Hempfield Township, Erie, Grove City, AHN Allegheny General Hospital, and AHN West Penn Hospital.

AHN continues to follow the guidance of the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Pennsylvania Department of Health when it comes to COVID-19 safety protocols, and requires that patients, visitors, and staff wear masks within AHN clinical facilities.

Patients attending the Forbes event will be asked a series of questions regarding COVID-19 upon arrival at the facility.
