PITTSBURGH (April 25, 2025) — Allegheny Health Network is pleased to announce that it is has received a generous gift from Joseph and Kathleen Guyaux to support three of AHN’s key medical specialties — neurosciences, cardiovascular medicine and orthopaedics.

The $3 million gift will be split evenly among the three service lines — $1 million for the AHN Cardiovascular Institute, $1 million for the AHN Neuroscience Institute, and $1 million to the AHN Orthopaedic Institute, which will supplement a previously established endowed chair fund (The Banman-Lupke Patrick J. DeMeo Chair of Orthopaedic Surgery).

The Cardiovascular Institute gift will create the Joseph and Kathleen Guyaux Innovation Program in Cardiology, while the neurosciences gift will create the Joseph and Kathleen Guyaux Comprehensive Epilepsy Center.

“Joe and Kathy have established a tremendous philanthropic legacy across Western Pennsylvania, and we are thrilled to be a significant part of that legacy,” said Mark Sevco, president, AHN.  “All of us at AHN are inspired by the Guyauxs’ generosity, by their commitment to this region, and by this gift, which will positively impact the health and well-being of AHN’s patients for years to come.”

Mr. Guyaux is the long-time chair of the Highmark Health board of directors, and he also serves on the boards of Highmark Inc. and AHN.

He retired in 2016 from PNC Financial Services Group, Inc., where he worked for 44 years and served as president from 2002-2012. His board service with Highmark began in 2004, and he has been Highmark Health’s board president since 2015.

“Highmark Health is eternally grateful to Joe for his years of service to our organization and the people we serve,” said David Holmberg, president and CEO, Highmark Health. “His insight and his careful stewardship helped to lead Highmark and AHN through some of the most challenging times the health care industry has ever experienced and have helped Highmark to grow and flourish over the last two decades.”

Mr. Guyaux has also served as chairman of the board and as an independent director for Duquesne Holdings LLC and Duquesne Light Company. He is a life trustee for the Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh and an emeritus director for the Pittsburgh Civic Light Opera and Duquesne University.

Over the years, the Guyauxs, of Fox Chapel, have made generous gifts to local organizations such Pittsburgh CLO, Duquesne University, University of Pittsburgh, UPMC Children’s Hospital, Carnegie Museum of Natural History, Pittsburgh Fisher House, United Way, and Project SEED’s backpack project, among other programs and organizations.

They also funded the 2010 renovation and expansion of the emergency department at AHN Allegheny Valley Hospital in Natrona Heights, with a $400,000 gift. Mr. and Mrs. Guyaux were both born and raised in Tarentum, and their sons, Clint and Matt, were born at AVH.

“Having lived all of our lives in Western Pennsylvania — along with our grandparents and parents, and now our children and grandchildren — we have always felt the need to support the region that has given us so much,” Mr. Guyaux said. “We are thrilled to again be collaborating with our friends at AHN to support their clinical programs and outstanding caregivers.”

Mrs. Guyaux, who retired from teaching in 2000, was employed by the Westmoreland Intermediate Unit and taught special education in both the New Kensington-Arnold School District and the Burrell School District.
