Allegheny Health Network’s West Penn Hospital Boosts Critical Care Capacity with New Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU)

PITTSBURGH – Allegheny Health Network’s West Penn Hospital today announced the opening of a new Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU), a significant enhancement expanding the hospital's critical care capacity.

Dedicated to non-surgical medical emergencies and severe illnesses, AHN West Penn's new MICU will provide specialized medical management for critically ill patients. This includes individuals suffering from conditions such as severe infections, respiratory failure, cardiac arrests, kidney failure, gastrointestinal bleeding, overdoses, diabetic ketoacidosis, stroke (non-surgical), or those who have recently undergone a bone marrow transplant.

This expansion significantly advances AHN West Penn’s critical care capabilities, enabling more effective and efficient triage and admission of patients requiring a higher level of care. Through AHN’s centralized One Call Transfer Center, the MICU will streamline patient transfers and admissions not only from within AHN but also from other hospitals across the region.

AHN’s multimillion-dollar investment will also create 100 new jobs in Pittsburgh’s Bloomfield neighborhood.

Key details of the new MICU include:

• Enhanced Capacity: The new MICU features an 18-bed capacity, projected to support approximately 1,000 critical care admissions annually.
• 24/7 Intensivist Coverage: The unit is fully supported by 24/7 onsite medical intensivists and a dedicated advanced practice provider (APP) team, ensuring continuous, expert care.
• Network-Wide Tele-ICU Services: The MICU physician team will also serve as the AHN network-wide tele-ICU team, extending critical care expertise across the entire system.
• Seamless Patient Placement: Medical house officers and the One Call Transfer Center will collaborate closely to ensure proper pre-arrival patient placement and seamless patient transitions.

This strategic expansion further solidifies AHN West Penn's position as a leading provider of critical care services.

Located on Friendship Avenue in Pittsburgh’s Bloomfield neighborhood, AHN West Penn is one of the region’s oldest and most comprehensive hospitals.
