Ariel Mariano Aballay, MD, FACS

Ariel Aballay, MD

Medical Director
General Surgeon/Burn Surgeon 

A native of Cordoba, Argentina, Dr. Aballay completed medical school at the National University of Cordoba before moving to Pittsburgh. In 2001, he joined West Penn Hospital Department of Surgery, where he completed his residency.

Dr. Aballay is especially interested in techniques developed to obtain the best possible cosmetic and functional results after burn injuries. He has shared his expertise on burn trauma treatment in seminars throughout the United States.

He is a board-certified surgeon and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. Dr. Aballay is a clinical assistant professor of surgery for Temple University School of Medicine. Additionally, he is a clinical assistant professor for the Master of Physician's Assistant Studies Program at Chatham University.  

Dr. Aballay is a member of the American Burn Association (ABA) and the International Society for Burn Injuries. He holds a position as American Burn Association national faculty for the Advanced Burn Life Support course. 

Lourdes Castanon, MD

General Surgeon/Burn Surgeon

Lourdes Castanon, MDDr. Castanon completed her medical school at The State University of New York Health Science Center at Brooklyn. She then went on to complete a Critical Care fellowship with a subspecialty in adult and pediatric burns at The University of Texas Medical Branch and Shriner’s Hospitals for Children in Galveston Texas. She completed an externship at R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in the Neurosurgical and Trauma Critical Care Units. Gaining a special interest in emergency general surgery, she moved to New Haven, Connecticut where she completed an Acute Care Surgery and Trauma fellowship at Yale School of Medicine.

Dr. Castanon’s field of interest includes the care of burns and reconstruction, complex wound disorders, necrotizing soft tissue infections and the complex trauma patient.  She has shared her expertise in trauma, critical care and burns in multiple local and national conferences.

Dr. Castanon is board-certified in General Surgery and in Critical Care. She is fellow and active member of the American College Surgeons, American Burn Association, Pan-American Trauma Society and Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma.  She is the course director and instructor of Advance trauma operative management, Advance life support and Advance trauma life support.  

Robert W. Kelly, MD

General Surgeon/Burn Surgeon

Dr. Kelly is a graduate of Wake Forest University School of Medicine and completed his residency in Surgery at Tripler Army Medical Center. 

In addition to West Penn Burn Center, Dr. Kelly practices at Allegheny General Hospital (AGH) in the Division of Trauma Surgery.

Dr. Kelly is a board-certified surgeon and an assistant professor of surgery at Temple University School of Medicine.

Multidisciplinary teams are the cornerstone of patient-focused care at West Penn Burn Center. The  team members include not only board-certified physician specialists, but also nurses certified in advanced burn care, nutritionists, physical therapists, psychologists and other specialists needed to provide the highest level of patient-focused care for the more than 400 inpatients treated annually at the West Penn Burn Center.

Eric Tolchin, PA-C

Eric Tolchin, PA-C

Physician Assistant

Eric has more than 20 years of experience in the treatment and management of burn patients. He is involved in all aspects of burn care including outpatient, inpatient and surgical care. Eric is also involved in the education and training of graduate medical professionals.

In addition to training in the Burn Center, Eric is a Clinical Assistant Professor with Chatham University. 

Mary Ann Raible, RN, BSN

Mary Ann Raible

Nurse Manager

A native Pittsburgher, Mary Ann has a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Pittsburgh. With an extensive background in critical care nursing, Mary Ann has received many awards during her 28 years at West Penn Hospital: inducted into the Nursing Division’s Academy of Excellence in 2007, awarded the Lois Hann Award for research in 2009, and the University of Pittsburgh’s Cameo of Caring Award representing West Penn Hospital in 2010.

Mary Ann’s role as chairperson of the Professional Development Council was key in West Penn Hospital’s Magnet designation in 2007 and re-designation in 2012.

Christine PerlickChristine Perlick, BSN, RN

Outreach Coordinator 

Christine is a native Pittsburgher who came to West Penn Burn Center with a background in both clinical nursing and sales and marketing.  She earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Edinboro University of Pa.

Christine began her career as a Pediatric Medical/Surgical staff nurse at Texas Childrens Hospital in Houston.   She worked as a Pediatric Medical/Surgical staff nurse at Allegheny General Hospital and then as a Clinical Nurse III in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at West Penn Hospital.

Christine has several years of marketing and teaching experience from her time spent working with a specialty pharmaceutical company that focused on several therapeutic areas, one of which was Dermatology.
