Variance Monitoring – Jefferson’s One-of-a-Kind Clinical Treatment Strategy
Surgical care of complex heart, lung, and vascular conditions requires precise expertise from everyone on the team. Coordination and communication among all members of the Heart Institute’s multi-disciplinary team, the patient and their family is a must. Additionally, the ability to measure the effectiveness of plans of care and develop new treatments is needed to deliver the highest standards of care that meet the exact needs of every single patient.
At Jefferson Hospital, we have developed a one-of-a-kind program to do just that: Our Variance Monitoring program is a unique approach to the care of our surgical patients. Every patient’s vitals and progress are monitored through daily data analysis by the patient care team and patient’s progress is discussed at daily multi-disciplinary meetings. More than 150 data elements are measured and compared against the treatment plan. This action allows our team to quickly determine a patient’s condition and immediately change the course of treatment to better reflect the patient’s unique situation.
Every patient’s clinical data and progress are monitored and compared to their recovery pathway. The multi-clinical team works to ensure the patient is progressing as expected. More than 150 data elements are used to measure and compare the patient’s progress against their recovery pathway. This action allows our team to quickly determine a patient’s condition and immediately change the course of treatment to better reflect the patient’s unique situation.
Through this real-time data collection, the Heart Institute team can complete a clinical statistical review and compare our recovery results to those of other hospitals, nationally. We use this real-time data to identify and develop better treatment opportunities and to improve patient care and recovery times for all of our surgical patients at the Heart Institute at Jefferson Hospital.
