Mary Chester Wasko, MD, MSc

Dr. Wasko brings unique expertise in inflammatory arthritides and a wide range of autoimmune disorders to the Lupus Center.

She has been active in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) research with a focus the relationship between RA and secondary disorders often associated with it, including cardiovascular disease and diabetes. She has extensively studied how arthritis medications, exercise, and body composition impact diabetes risk in patients with RA.

Dr. Wasko joined WPAHS from the University of Pittsburgh where she was an associate professor of medicine in the Division of Rheumatology and Clinical Immunology, associate professor of nursing and visiting professor of epidemiology.

She earned her medical degree from University of North Carolina School of Medicine and a master’s degree in clinical research design and biostatistics from the University of Michigan School of Public Health. She completed an internal medicine residency and a general surgery internship at Geisinger Medical Center as well as serving as the chief medical resident for a year. She completed a three-year rheumatology fellowship at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor and is board certified in internal medicine and rheumatology.

Dr. Wasko was awarded the American College of Rheumatology’s Fellow Award and is a member of the American College of Rheumatology. She is Associate Editor of Arthritis Care & Research and an ad hoc reviewer for numerous other journals. Dr. Wasko has published articles in the Journal of the American Medical Association, the New England Journal of Medicine, and Arthritis and Rheumatism, among others. She has authored more than 35 peer-reviewed publications and numerous invited reviews and book chapters.
