Meet the Jefferson Hospital CNO

Dr. Joy M. Peters is the chief nursing officer at Jefferson Hospital, part of Allegheny Health Network. She is a graduate of the Western Pennsylvania Hospital School of Nursing and earned a bachelor’s degree from The Pennsylvania State University. Joy also earned a dual MSN/MBA from the University of Pittsburgh and received a doctorate in nursing practice from Carlow University. Her scholarly work centered on the implementation of lean as a strategy to improve nurse communication HCAHPS scores. She also received the ANCC Nurse Executive Advanced Certification for leadership.

In addition, Joy has worked closely with the Pittsburgh Regional Healthcare Initiative — a collaborative to address health care safety and quality. In this endeavor, she worked on preventing infections in health care through use of the Toyota Production System. Joy has also presented locally and nationally on the application of lean in the elimination of central-line-associated bloodstream infections. She appeared on ABC’s 20/20 segment: “Germs – The Dirty Dozen,” and leads the AHN collaborative for the prevention of C. difficile infection.

Additionally, Joy proudly provided the keynote address for the graduating class of 2010 of the West Penn Hospital School of Nursing, her alma mater. Most recently, Joy received honorable mention for the first Excellence in Nursing Awards by Pittsburgh Magazine.

Joy is a member of the Southwest Pennsylvania Organization of Nurse Leaders and is on the legislative committee of the Pennsylvania Organization of Nurse Leaders. She belongs to the VFW Auxiliary Post 7376.
