Women in Medicine (WIN)

Women in Medicine group provides networking, development opportunities

Allegheny Health Network now has a special program providing a supportive, professional network for women physicians and executives. This group, called Women in Medicine (WiM), was formed in the Department of Medicine in 2012 by Susan Manzi, MD, Kathleen Holleran, MD, and Elizabeth Cuevas, MD. In 2013, they expanded the group to include all women physicians and executives, including faculty, fellows, residents and medical students, within Allegheny Health Network.

Women in Medicine aims to create a positive environment for female physicians and physicians-in-training that will enhance personal and professional career development through mentorship, service opportunities, speaker series and social events. The group hopes that by providing AHN with a robust support structure that fosters and encourages a flexible and healthy work/life balance, the network will be set to recruit and retain the best women physicians and executives in the country.

In the short time since the program began, Women in Medicine has held several events, including guest speakers at a yearly lecture series covering a range of personal and professional topics. This year, the fall speaker will be Jennifer Owens, Editorial Director of Working Mother magazine, who will speak about work/life balance.

Women in Medicine also hosts small group discussions on books and media, as well as a mentoring program where junior faculty and residents are paired with more senior members. The group has also volunteered together in the community, working at the North Side’s Pumpkinfest; a health screening at Highmark’s Fun, Fit and Fabulous event; and mentoring with the organization Gwen’s Girls.

Plans for the future include an educational session by a local financial planner, social networking activities and lunch-time brown-bag programs throughout the year.

For more information on the program and how to participate, please contact Jessica Hollie at 412.359.5065 or jhollie@wpahs.org.
