Liver Cancer Diagnosis

In the early stages of liver cancer, you may not experience symptoms. By the time symptoms appear, and you receive a diagnosis, the cancer may have spread to other organs. In this advanced stage, liver cancer is more challenging to treat.

That’s why it’s so critical to receive an early, accurate diagnosis. A precise diagnosis helps us create an effective treatment plan that will give you the best long-term results.

Expert liver cancer diagnosis at AHN

At Allegheny Health Network Cancer Institute, we use sophisticated diagnostic methods to detect cancer quickly and accurately, so you can begin treatment right away. We offer:

  • Rigorous screening processes: Our team specializes in screening high-risk patients, such as people with cirrhosis or hepatitis. We use blood tests to ensure your liver is working properly. We follow your health carefully, reducing the risk of cancer appearing. If you do develop cancer, we treat it quickly, before it grows.
  • Patient-centric care: We meet regularly to discuss every patient to tailor the most effective treatment plans, depending on your diagnosis and stage.
  • Compassionate care management: A dedicated specialist is available to answer questions about next steps and help you manage side effects. And our comprehensive support services help you feel your best during your care.
  • A team approach: Our specialists work closely with surgeons, radiologists, oncologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and others to manage every aspect of your care. We design your treatment plan just for you, with every aspect of your health in mind.

Liver cancer treatment

After our skilled team has diagnosed and staged the cancer, we discuss your treatment options with you. You meet with your team within three days of diagnosis. Your treatment plan may include revolutionary radiation therapy treatment that destroys the tumor with minimal damage to healthy tissue.

Other treatments include:

  • Liver surgery (removing part of the liver)
  • Radiation/stereotactic radiation
  • Liver transplant
  • Interventional radiology (chemoembolization, radioembolization)
  • Chemotherapy (including clinical trials)
  • Radiofrequency ablation or microwave ablation

We’re also one of the few area hospitals with a liver transplant program, as part of the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) program. We perform a high number of transplants for patients with liver cancer. Find out more about our approach to treating liver cancer.
