Breastfeeding Best Practices

Breastfeeding Best Practices, an online course designed for nurses, teaches the benefits of breastfeeding and various techniques of this practice. Nurses will learn about the Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI), as well as benefits of and obstacles to breastfeeding. In this course, participants will navigate through a voice-recorded PowerPoint presentation and will watch a video. Nurses’ growth in breastfeeding knowledge will be assessed using a pretest and posttest. Upon successful completion of the course, participants will receive a certificate of completion.

Learning Objectives

  • Define the Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI)
  • Identify two factors which contribute to early termination of breastfeeding
  • Recall the ten steps of the Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative
  • Define “exclusive” breast milk feeding
  • List three risks of formula supplementation in the postpartum period
  • Discuss three benefits of skin-to-skin
  • Identify four signs of a good latch
  • Demonstrate three breastfeeding positions
  • Recall the procedure for manual expression
  • Identify three signs of effective milk transfer

Expected Outcomes

  • The nursing staff will be empowered (via evidence based education) to efficiently assist breastfeeding mothers using current recommendations
  • Breastfeeding initiation and exclusive breastfeeding rates at The Western Pennsylvania Hospital will increase
