Ophthalmology Specialty Care

When your eyes or vision change suddenly, it can be disorienting. At Allegheny Health Network (AHN) Surgery Institute, we can provide care for both common and rare conditions affecting your eyes and vision.

Our ophthalmologists provide prompt and compassionate care for routine eye concerns at general ophthalmology practices across the AHN network. However, when you need ophthalmic expertise for a more complex concern, our ophthalmology specialists can be consulted to help. Allegheny Ophthalmic & Orbital Associates, located at Allegheny General Hospital, specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of most “difficult-to-treat” eye problems.

Ophthalmology specialty care at Allegheny Health Network: Why choose us?

We have the medical expertise you need to feel confident in your specialty vision care. Highlights of our program include:

  •  Ophthalmology expertise: Our physicians are board-certified in ophthalmology, which shows their expertise in the diagnosis and treatment of eye conditions. Each has also received extra (fellowship) training in a specific area of ophthalmology care. Their level of training means we can offer uncommon expertise in both common eye problems and less-routine conditions, such as orbital tumors, and macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, corneal dystrophies.
  •  Advanced diagnosis: When doctors diagnose eye problems earlier, they’re often treated more effectively. That’s why we use advanced imaging techniques and certain eye tests not widely available to detect eye problems in their earliest stages.
  • Leading treatments: We offer exciting therapies to treat complex eye conditions in new ways. For example, we can preserve the vision of those affected by macular degeneration for longer than ever before. To do this, we deliver the latest medications directly to the affected area of the eye.
  • Team mindset: They also consult with endocrinologists and other specialists when a vision issue may arise from other parts of your body. This can happen if you have diabetes, for example.
  • Convenience: While our physicians are based at Allegheny General Hospital, most specialists travel to general ophthalmology practices throughout western Pennsylvania. This arrangement can make it easier to get specialized eye care without a lot of travel.

Our ophthalmology surgery specialties

Our institute provides comprehensive care for urgent and long-term problems that affect the eye, such as injuries or disease. Each of our physicians has received the highest level of training possible for their eye care subspecialty. This training means we offer expertise in caring for most eye problems.

Orbit and oculoplastics

This medical/surgical specialty deals with orbital tumors and problems relating to the eye socket and eyelid. Our surgeons are known for their expertise in treating complex problems like thyroid eye disease.

We also offer expertise in eyelid surgery. We use sophisticated techniques to restore how the eyelid looks and functions.

Retina care

Retina care focuses on problems such as injuries and genetic conditions that can cause the retina to tear, detach or undergo degeneration. Our retina surgeons underwent extensive training to treat retina problems, such as macular degeneration (a common condition that leads to vision loss).

Our retina specialists stay up-to-date on the most promising treatments available. These treatments include laser therapies and injectable medications called VEGF inhibitors that allow you to keep your vision longer.

Cornea care

Our corneal care specialist cares for diseases that affect the eye surface, such as dry eye, eye infections, and diseases that cause eye inflammation. Our specialist uses a new diagnostic tool — called a tear lab — to more accurately measure your tears and has special expertise in corneal transplant surgery.
