Medical Physics Residency – Diagnostic Radiological Physics

About the program

The goals and objectives of the Medical Physics Residency Program in Diagnostic Medical Physics at Allegheny Health Network are to prepare new medical physics graduates to independently perform the diverse duties of an imaging physicist in a typical practice. The residency is structured as a two-year training program. By the end of our program, physics residents will be ready to embark on a career in diagnostic medical physics. They will be well prepared for their board examinations, and have experience in all the tasks required of a clinical physicist.

Our curriculum follows the recommendations of AAPM Report 249. Learning is structured as a hands-on apprenticeship and lectures, intended to support the resident in incrementally acquiring core competence to practice diagnostic medical physics independently.

Residents will work through a series of clinical competencies and rotations including:

  • Clinical Orientation and Patient Management

  • Patient-specific physics services
  • Information Systems/PACS
  • Administrative and Professional
  • Clinical Program Development
  • Radiation Safety and Regulatory
  • Shielding
  • New Equipment Acceptance and Commissioning
  • Design of Quality Control (QC) and Radiation Safety Programs
  • Image Quality Improvement
  • Clinical Research Project
  • Radioactive Material
