Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology Fellowship

Program Director: Charles Miller, MD
Accreditation: ACGME
Program Length: 2 years
Fellows per year: 2

About the program

The Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology Fellowship is part of the Mario Lemieux Cardiac Arrythmia Center based at Allegheny General Hospital (AGH) and Forbes Hospital (FH), both in Pittsburgh. Between both busy, active sites, electrophysiology procedures are performed for a large and growing number patients annually. The EP fellowship program provides clinical training and research experience for qualified cardiology trainees to work as sub-specialists in the care of patients with cardiac rhythm disorders.

The Lemieux Center is a regional leader in cardiac arrhythmia care and clinical research and is a referral center for the Allegheny Health Network and other sites around western Pennsylvania and adjacent states. Our center is itself part of the AHN Cardiovascular Institute, a quaternary care referral center with high volume genetic heart disease, cardiac imaging, interventional cardiology, structural heart disease, cardiac surgery, advanced heart failure and cardiac transplant programs.

Clinical Training

Our program provides trainees with exposure to complex catheter ablation including ventricular tachycardia, supraventricular tachycardia and atrial fibrillation, as well as implantation of the full spectrum of cardiac devices and laser lead extraction.

Additionally, fellows gain experience with peri-operative care, inpatient consultative service, outpatient clinic, device clinic and remote device management.

Fellows benefit from conferences including daily morning case discussions, weekly EP teaching conference, weekly research meetings, morbidity and mortality conferences, cardiology grand rounds.

Research

Research is a central part of the academic mission of the electrophysiology department. Members present at prominent meetings and publish on an ongoing basis. All types of projects including randomized studies, registries and multicenter clinical trials are ongoing. Clinical EP fellows are expected to participate in research projects, providing them important experience as part of their career development. Mentorship is provided to fellows to contribute to ongoing projects and develop their own ideas.

Fellows participate in weekly group research meetings where the status of various projects as well as ideas for future projects are discussed. In addition to faculty and clinical trainees, research assistants, research fellows, and epidemiologists comprise the research infrastructure at our center.
