Fire in the Operating Room

Course Overview

This essential course equips learners within the operating room with the critical knowledge and skills needed to react swiftly and effectively to fires that may ignite during surgery. They will review the proper procedures for responding to four specific types of OR fires: airway fires, surgical drape fires, trash can fire, and fires in adjacent operating rooms. Through a combination of interactive simulation scenarios, the learners will gain confidence and competence to protect yourself, your team, and your patients.

Learning Objectives

  1. Demonstrate the correct and immediate actions required to effectively respond to various types of operating room fires.
  2. Describe the specific roles and responsibilities of each team member in effectively managing fire emergencies.
  3. Effectively apply proper fire-response techniques to four distinct scenarios: airway fires, surgical drape fires, trash can fire, and fires originating in adjacent operating rooms.

Malignant Hyperthermia

Course Overview

Master the critical skills needed for post-operative recovery, focusing on the life-threatening condition of Malignant Hyperthermia (MH). Through a high-fidelity simulation, the learner will encounter a patient exhibiting MH, allowing them to hone their ability to rapidly identify the symptoms and confidently implement appropriate management strategies. They will develop the crucial skill of recognizing delayed MH reactions, enabling them to provide timely and effective intervention.

Learning Objectives

  1. Identify the key signs and symptoms of malignant hyperthermia and initiate immediate, appropriate interventions.
  2. Deliver comprehensive and effective patient care during a malignant hyperthermia crisis, adhering to established protocols.
  3. Initiate the MH Crisis Alert and quickly locate the MH cart to secure essential resources for patient management.

Oral Maxillary Facial Surgery Simulations

OMFS Anesthesia Emergencies

Course Overview

Participants will actively participate in a variety of customized clinical scenarios showcasing both common and rare critical events encountered during the anesthetic management of patients undergoing dental and OMFS procedures. Emphasis is placed on airway management and airway complications including bronchospasm, laryngospasm, cannot intubate / cannot ventilate, but many other common and rare anesthetic complications are reviewed.

Learning Objectives

  1. Develop and refine the ability to diagnose and treat a wide range of anesthesia emergencies.
  2. Enhance crisis resource management skills through practical application in simulated high-pressure situations.
  3. Strengthen teamwork and improve communication and collaboration within the anesthesia and procedure team(s).
