Photoselective Vaporization of the Prostate (PVP)

This procedure uses a laser to destroy prostate tissue that is restricting urine flow. This outpatient procedure often provides relief to patients suffering from benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH).

The PVP procedure

PVP is performed under general anesthesia. A tube with an imaging system is inserted into the urethra. Your surgeon will then use that system to guide a laser that will burn away excess prostate tissue blocking urine flow. Because this procedure doesn’t involve cutting or scraping of tissue, there’s less loss of blood.

Benefits of PVP:

  • Immediate return of normal urine flow
  • Return home on the same day
  • Catheter is typically removed within 24 hours
  • Patients can often return to normal activities within 2-3 days
  • Low risk of complications
