Simulation Continuing Education

Client Event Debriefing

Course Description

Transform your team's learning culture. This course equips healthcare professionals with the knowledge and skills to lead effective debriefings after clinical events – both successes and challenges. Participants will master a structured debriefing approach to identify system-level factors impacting outcomes, foster continuous improvement, and ultimately enhance patient safety.

Learning Objectives

  1. Apply a structured debriefing process encompassing pre-briefing, event reconstruction, thorough analysis, and action planning.
  2. Facilitate debriefing sessions, creating a safe and respectful environment that encourages open communication and learning.
  3. Utilize specific communication techniques (e.g., active listening, paraphrasing, respectful inquiry) effectively during a debriefing session.

Debriefing Experienced Learners

Course Overview

This course is intended for simulation facilitators of all levels and reviews simulation debriefing best practices and how to debrief (more) experienced learners. Validated debriefing models recommended by STAR Center are discussed including their strengths and drawbacks. Facilitators are engaged in a didactic session.  With opportunity to practice live debriefing under the direction of a master debriefer. Techniques for simulation building and a variety of simulation resources that enhance debriefing effectiveness are presented. Strategies for recognizing and addressing learner performance gaps are reviewed and common debriefing pitfalls are identified.

Learning Objectives

  1. Review debriefing basics including purpose and general best practices.
  2. Discuss how to build the right simulation for the planned learners.
  3. Enhance one’s ability to identify, explore, and close learner performance gaps.
  4. Address common debriefing pitfalls and how to avoid them.
