About the program

Our Psychiatry Residency Program, based at Allegheny General Hospital (AGH), has the following educational mission: to train residents to accurately and efficiently diagnose and treat patients with psychiatric and behavioral disorders using a biopsychosocial approach and to foster critical thinking and leadership skills

Clinical and didactic experiences are designed so that graduates will be proficient in developing an accurate diagnosis and thoughtful biopsychosocial formulation and implementing a treatment plan that includes any necessary medical evaluation, and provision of appropriate psychotherapies and psychopharmacology, and community, family and social interventions.

PGY-1 rotations include clinical inpatient and consult liaison experience with geriatric and general adult psychiatric patients at Forbes Hospital. Resident rotate in internal, family and emergency medicine. They will also rotate in neurology at Allegheny General Hospital.  While on the psychiatric inpatient unit, residents are involved in supervising and teaching medical students.

The PGY-2 training experience includes rotations providing psychiatric consultation and treatment in a general medical hospital as well as in an emergency room setting; an intensive partial hospital program for adults with anxiety and depression, a child and adolescent experience in a school based partial hospital treatment program, an intensive outpatient substance abuse program, and an inpatient VA schizophrenia unit.

Outpatient training is emphasized in PGY3. This educational experience provides residents clinical experience in providing therapy and psychopharmacologic treatment on a continuous basis in a general multidisciplinary outpatient clinic. There are also optional outpatient experiences at the VA, a substance abuse program, the county jail and/or our women’s peripartum mental health program.

PGY-4 consists primarily of electives, which are mutually planned and agreed on by the program director and resident. These may include: an intensive partial program for women's health, integration into a family or internal medicine outpatient setting, treatment services for inmates in the county jail, neuromodulation training in TMS and ECT, teaching, time for research and quality improvement, and additional experience in C/L, inpatient and outpatient clinical settings.
