Infusion Therapy

Central Line Insertion for Advanced Providers

Course Overview

This comprehensive course covers essential anatomy, internal jugular and subclavian insertion techniques, and potential complications associated with central line placement. The program includes an online virtual module followed by hands-on simulation using task trainers, providing learners with the opportunity to practice central line insertion and manage potential complications in a safe, controlled environment.

Course Objectives

  1. Identify essential anatomy related to central line catheters.
  2. Describe how to prepare for the procedure.
  3. Demonstrate how to insert central lines via the internal jugular and subclavian insertion sites.

Implanted Port Accessing and De-Accessing Course

Course Overview

This course is designed for nurses who care for patients with implanted venous ports. It focuses on the safe and effective use of these ports, including accessing and de-accessing the device, obtaining blood specimens, and troubleshooting common problems.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Define the proper procedure for accessing and de-accessing an implanted port.
  2. Describe the procedure for drawing a blood specimen from a port.
  3. Verbalize at least three potential port complications and solutions that may remedy the problem.

Intravenous (IV) Therapy Curriculum for the Licensed Practice Nurse (LPN)

Course Overview

This course, designed to meet PA State Board of Nursing requirements, equips licensed practical nurses with comprehensive IV therapy and insertion skills. Upon completion, nurses will be able to provide high-quality, safe, effective, and efficient IV care.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Define the standards of care for the insertion of peripheral intravenous (IV) catheter insertion.
  2. Describe complications of IV therapy.
  3. Demonstrate proficiency in inserting peripheral IV catheters, and in the care and maintenance of both peripheral and central IV catheters.

Intravenous Therapy Course for AHN Licensed Practice Nurses (LPN)

Course Overview

This course is designed to provide comprehensive IV therapy and insertion skills training education to meet the learning needs of the licensed practical nurse as an employee of Allegheny Health Network (AHN). Additionally, the learner will review and practice, through simulation, IV insertion, the processes of care and maintenance of additional access devices to include peripherally inserted central line (PICC), midline and Central venous catheters (CVC).

Learning Outcomes

  1. Demonstrate the ability to insert a peripheral IV catheter proficiently within a simulated clinical setting.
  2. Provide competent care and maintenance for all types of IV catheters (peripheral and central).
  3. Identify and demonstrate the use and maintenance of PICC, midline and central line access devices.

Ultrasound-Guided Peripheral Intravenous (IV) Catheter Insertion

Course Overview

This course is designed for experienced providers who are already proficient in peripheral IV access to gain the knowledge necessary to insert IVs while using ultrasound technology. Learners will master vein identification and AccuCathTM catheter placement, enhancing their ability to achieve successful IV access.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Demonstrate setup of the ultrasound unit for venous access.
  2. Identify venous and arterial vessels by ultrasound.
  3. Explain the appropriate indications and contraindications for utilizing ultrasound guidance during IV access.
  4. Perform AccuCathTM insertion proficiently with ultrasound guidance in a simulated environment
