Quick guide to Orthopaedic Trauma Fellowship

About the program

The Orthopaedic Trauma Fellowship is sponsored by Allegheny General Hospital and has a longstanding tradition of excellence in both fellow education and patient care. The fellow will gain comprehensive training in the management of patients with musculoskeletal trauma and be an integral part of the Orthopaedic Trauma Service which is led by five fellowship trained Orthopaedic Traumatologists. There is an organized structure of academic and clinical criteria to allow the fellow extensive exposure to advanced plating techniques, complex periarticular upper and lower extremity injuries, pelvic and acetabular fractures and management of soft tissues and nonunions.

Additionally, our Trauma Division also offers expertise in complex knee ligamentous injuries, posttraumatic joint arthroplasty procedures, and foot and ankle reconstructive procedures. The fellow is hired at a junior faculty position, giving him/her the ability to gain decision-making skills and leadership experience. The fellow is responsible for resident and medical student education, a weekly orthopaedic trauma conference, and a publishable research paper. A full-time research assistant supports the Orthopaedic Trauma Division.

The Allegheny Health Network Department of Orthopaedic Surgery continues to expand and distinguish itself with high clinical volume and outstanding post-graduate education. All subspecialties of orthopaedic surgery are well represented and the residency program has recently expanded to 5 residents each academic year.
