PGY1 Pharmacy residency program – Acute Care Setting

History and purpose

The PGY1 Pharmacy Residency Program – Acute Care Setting was first accredited by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) in 1989 and most recently reaccredited in 2021. The program provides comprehensive training in all aspects of institutional practice with an emphasis on the delivery of pharmaceutical care and clinical services. The PGY1 residency programs build upon Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and outcomes to develop pharmacist practitioners with knowledge, skills, and abilities as defined in the educational competency areas, goals, and objectives. Residents who successfully complete PGY1 residency programs will be skilled in diverse patient care, practice management, leadership, and education, and be prepared to provide patient care, seek board certification in pharmacotherapy (i.e., BCPS), and pursue advanced education and training opportunities including postgraduate year two (PGY2) residencies.

Rotations

The 12-month postgraduate training experience is composed of a variety of required and elective rotations, as follows:

  • Orientation (6 weeks)
  • Cardiac Service Line (Choice of: Cardiac Care Unit or Heart Failure Transitions of Care (TOC) (1 month)
  • Surgical Service Line (Choice of: Trauma ICU (TICU), Neuro-ICU, or Cardiothoracic ICU (CTICU) (1 month)
  • Intensive Care Service Line (Choice of: Medical ICU (MICU), CTICU, or TICU) (1 month)
  • Transition of Care (TOC) Service Line (Internal Medicine TOC, Heart failure TOC, abdominal transplant TOC)  
  • Infectious Diseases (1 month)
  • Internal Medicine (1 month)
  • Clinical Administration (1 month)
  • Pharmacokinetics and On-Call (Longitudinal)
  • Practice Management (Longitudinal)
  • Inpatient Pharmacy Staffing (Longitudinal)

The specific program for each resident varies based upon the resident’s goals, interests, and previous experience. However, all residents are required to complete the above core rotations. The required rotations above can be repeated and tailored to resident interests as an elective, or the resident may select from other elective rotations below.

PGY 1 Pharmacy residency program – Ambulatory Setting

The Program was established in 2012 and was most recently reaccredited by ASHP in 2021. The program provides an environment for comprehensive education and training in drug therapy and disease state management for patients in a collaborative ambulatory setting. The PGY1 residency programs build upon Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and outcomes to develop pharmacist practitioners with knowledge, skills, and abilities as defined in the educational competency areas, goals, and objectives. Residents who successfully complete PGY1 residency programs will be skilled in diverse patient care, practice management, leadership, and education, and be prepared to provide patient care, seek board certification in pharmacotherapy (i.e., BCPS), and pursue advanced education and training opportunities including postgraduate year two (PGY2) residencies.

Examples of other elective rotations include further concentrated learning experiences in the core rotations or in nutrition support, toxicology, special populations, or infectious disease.

Allegheny General Hospital is a level 1 trauma center, comprehensive stroke center, and comprehensive cardiac care center. PGY2 Infectious diseases pharmacy residency program

History and purpose

The PGY2 Infectious Diseases Pharmacy Residency Program at Allegheny General Hospital was started in 2012 and was most recently re-accredited by ASHP in 2021. The program provides an environment to enhance pharmacotherapy skills in a variety of inpatient and outpatient settings. Comprehensive training includes experiences with infectious diseases consultation services, multidisciplinary HIV clinic, antimicrobial stewardship program, and microbiology. The program’s inaugural class started in July 2012.

The purpose of the AGH PGY2 residency programs build upon Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and PGY1 pharmacy residency training to develop pharmacist practitioners with knowledge, skills, and abilities as defined in the educational competency areas, goals, and objectives for advanced practice areas. Residents who successfully complete PGY2 residency programs are prepared for advanced patient care or other specialized positions, and board certification in the infectious diseases pharmacy advanced practice area.

Rotations

Rotations for the PGY2 Infectious Diseases Residency Program include the following:

Core rotations include: 

  • Orientation (5 weeks) 
  • Infectious Diseases 1, 2, and 3 (4-6 weeks each)
  • Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) Clinic 1 and 2 (4-6 weeks each)*
  • Antimicrobial Stewardship 1 and 2 (4-6 weeks each)

    • During month of December, desk time is provided in which primarily research is the focus for 1 month.

The elective rotations include (2 and ½ months):

History and purpose

The Program was established in 2012 by an experienced leadership team and was most recently reaccredited by ASHP in 2021. The Program is combined with a Master of Public Health (MPH) degree from the University Of Pittsburgh Graduate School Of Public Health and provides opportunities for the resident to develop leadership and expert pharmacy management skills in a variety of settings.

PGY2 residency programs build upon Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and PGY1 pharmacy residency training to develop pharmacist practitioners with knowledge, skills, and abilities as defined in the educational competency areas, goals, and objectives for advanced practice areas. Residents who successfully complete PGY2 residency programs are prepared for advanced patient care or other specialized positions, and board certification in the advanced practice area, if available.

Residents in this program are integrally involved in daily leadership activities, gaining hands-on experience in preparation to assume leadership roles upon graduation, either in traditional clinical or operational leadership paths or in less traditional career paths in a variety of leadership and corporate roles. The program allows for flexibility and customization to match the evolving career aspirations of the residents. Upon graduation, each resident will receive a PGY1 and PGY2 certificate as well as the MPH degree.
