Welcome

Welcome to Allegheny General Hospital Interventional Cardiology Fellowship training program.  Allegheny General Hospital, located in the North Side of the City of Pittsburgh, is one of the largest hospitals in Western Pennsylvania with around 571 quaternary hospital and teaching beds. Our Interventional Cardiology Fellowship program started in 1999 and over the last 21 years has trained more than 60 interventional cardiologists who currently are leaders in their field and communities. Our fellowship program is diverse by all means. In addition to focusing on coronary interventions and high risk PCI, we have developed a comprehensive high volume structural heart disease program that includes, but not limited to, training in transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR), percutaneous mitral valve interventions (Mitraclip and TMVR), left atrial appendage occluder, percutaneous closures of intracardiac defects and perivalvular leaks.

The Interventional Cardiology program also offers a comprehensive Endovascular peripheral vascular training along with a variety of catheter-based therapies for acute pulmonary embolism (various thrombolysis and thromboembolectomy devices).

Being a quaternary hospital and in conjunction with the heart failure and transplant team, our fellows are exposed and trained on a wide variety of percutaneous circulatory support devices (ECMO, IMPELLA, Tandem Heart).

The program offers rotations in our Allegheny Health Network (AHN) sister hospitals in the area in order to provide community hospital-based experience.Allegheny General Hospital is one of the leading hospitals in research, excellence and innovation.  Our dedicated physician investigators offer our patients access to cutting edge technologies and therapies.

We thank you for your interest in applying for our interventional cardiology program.

About the program

Our Interventional Cardiology Fellowship Program was established and accredited in 1999. The interventional cardiology faculty have been dedicated to the goal of providing a comprehensive educational environment that fosters the development of fellows, thereby enabling them to become proficient interventional cardiologists. To achieve this goal the interventional cardiology curriculum integrates the basic sciences as applied to clinical cardiology with in-depth interventional procedures that will provide the opportunities for attainment of technical proficiency with Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI) procedures, Structural Heart Disease procedures, Peripheral Arterial Disease procedures and Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD) procedures. A broad base of knowledge and skills encompassing all phases of interventional cardiology will enable the fellow to provide the total management of patient care in a broad range of practice settings. The interventional cardiology curriculum, therefore, incorporates comprehensive teaching conferences, teaching rounds, and clinical experience in all facets of interventional cardiology. While the faculty believes that clinical experience is the principal foundation of interventional cardiology education, they also believe that a significant portion of the fellow’s education is achieved through lectures, conferences, and an up-to-date comprehension of interventional cardiology literature. Therefore, the interventional cardiology curriculum is designed to afford fellows the opportunity to attend lectures, conferences, conduct research, and also, have sufficient time for review and study of current literature. Since being accredited, the fellows have had 100 percent (100%), first attempt, board pass rate.

To safely provide compassionate, patient-centered care with the utmost professionalism and commitment to high quality. The aims of the training program are also to advance the quality of fellow education and training. The goals of this fellowship program are to educate and train fellows in a specialized cardiovascular disease area requiring technical, educational and research skills involved in interventional cardiology. Fellows have participated in patient safety and quality assurance committees during the year. Our aim is to enhance attendance and continued participation in our highly robust program.
