AHN Neuroradiology Division
About the AHN Neuroradiology Division
The AHN Neuroradiology Division is dedicated to providing advanced imaging services for the diagnosis, treatment planning, and research of neurological conditions, aiming to provide the best possible health outcomes for our patients.
The Neuroradiology Division is staffed by a team of highly skilled radiologists and technologists who specialize in the imaging of the:
- Brain.
- Spinal cord.
- Peripheral nervous system (nerves that lie outside the brain and spinal cord).
We use state-of-the-art imaging technology and techniques to obtain detailed and precise images, enabling us to accurately diagnose a wide range of neurological disorders and conditions. This division offers a comprehensive range of neuroimaging services, including:
- Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI): MRI is a powerful imaging modality that providesand very detailed imagesscanning method that gives us clear pictures of your brain and spinal cord. It helps us understand their structure, how they function, and if there are any problems. We use special MRI techniques to get even more specific information, such as looking at brain activity, water flow, or the blood vessels in your head. Some specialties we offer include diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI), functional MRI (fMRI), and magnetic resonance angiography (MRA).
- Computed tomography (CT): CT scans are an important tool for quickly evaluating urgent brain conditions, like when someone has a head injury, stroke, or bleeding. This type of scan helps us see inside the brain using X-rays. We also use special CT techniques to assess how blood is flowing and to identify any unusual issues with the brain's blood vessels.
- Positron emission tomography (PET) imaging: This type of scan shows us the activity and chemical processes happening inside your brain. We use it to diagnose and keep an eye on conditions such as brain tumors, epilepsy, and diseases that cause brain cells to break down over time.
- Functional neuroimaging: We use advanced scans like fMRI and PET to map out brain activity and how different parts of the brain connect with each other. This is crucial for understanding where important brain functions are located, planning for surgeries, and monitoring various brain conditions.
AHN Neuroradiology Division FAQs
The AHN Neuroradiology Division helps our patients understand the diseases and conditions that are affecting their brain, spine, head, neck and nervous system. Your AHN care team is available to answer your questions, but to help get you started we’ve included some of the most frequently asked questions we receive from our patients.
What is a neuroradiologist?
A neuroradiologist is a medical doctor who specializes in diagnostic neuroradiology, focusing on the diagnosis of diseases and conditions affecting the brain, spine, head, and neck using various imaging techniques. They undergo extensive training in interpreting complex imaging studies to provide precise diagnoses.
What is the purpose of neuroradiology?
The primary purpose of neuroradiology is to accurately diagnose neurological conditions using advanced imaging technologies. This diagnostic neuroradiology expertise is crucial for guiding treatment decisions and monitoring patient progress for a wide range of disorders.
What is the difference between neurology and neuroradiology?
Neurology is a medical specialty that focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the nervous system, often involving direct patient care and management of neurological conditions. Neuroradiology, on the other hand, is a subspecialty of radiology that uses imaging techniques to diagnose these conditions, providing critical information to neurologists and other healthcare providers.
Getting care from the AHN Neuroradiology Division
Neuroradiologists play a crucial role in multidisciplinary teams, collaborating closely with other doctors to develop comprehensive patient treatment plans. Their detailed interpretations of imaging studies provide essential information that informs decisions made by neurologists, neurosurgeons, oncologists, and other specialists.
Our neuroradiologists offer featured programs like:
- Advanced epilepsy imaging.
- Advanced neuro-oncology imaging (including MR Perfusion and MR Spectroscopy).
- Advanced imaging for normal pressure hydrocephalus.
- Advanced stroke imaging (including CT Perfusion).
- Carotid plaque and vessel wall imaging.
- Functional MRI.
- RAPID ICH (exam prioritization for Intracranial Hemorrhage Imaging).
- Stroke (collaboration with AHN Neuroscience).
Our neuroradiology specialists
AHN neuroradiologists are board-certified in Diagnostic Radiology, which means they have achieved a specific, high level of professional qualification in the broader field of radiology before specializing in neuroradiology.
Many of our neuroradiologists have received extra, specialized training (a fellowship) in neuroradiology and also hold a Certificate of Added Qualification (CAQ) in Neuroradiology from the American Board of Radiology. This high level of training ensures they have the specialized expertise needed to interpret complex imaging studies of the nervous system.

How to get care
Our neuroradiologists review diagnostic imaging of brain, spine, arteries, and veins. If you need a diagnostic imaging test, your AHN care provider will give you a test order for the specific diagnostic imaging test(s) you need.
You can schedule your imaging test at an AHN Imaging location.
Once the imaging has been captured, one of our neuroradiologists will review your test and write up an assessment. Both you and your provider can review the test results using MyChart.
Advancing diagnostic neuroradiology care
We are actively involved in neuroimaging research initiatives aimed at advancing the understanding and treatment of neurological diseases. Our division also plays a vital role in educating medical students, residents, and fellows.
Refer your patient to AHN specialist
There are two ways for medical professionals, who are not a part of Allegheny Health Network, to refer their patients to an AHN specialist and request their first appointment.
1. Call (412) DOCTORS 412-362-8677.
2. Go to Find Care to find the right AHN specialist and the most convenient location. Then refer your patient, provide relevant patient details, and request an appointment directly from the doctor's profile.
For more information about referring your patient to an AHN specialist, read the Independent Physician Referral FAQs.
After referring your patient
Once your patient is receiving care from an AHN specialist, you can view their test results, see their treatment plan, follow their treatment progress, and collaborate with our team using the EpicCare® Link™ platform.
If you are new to EpicCare Link, or need to request your own EpicCare Link account, read: EpicCare Link for Patient Follow-up, for user instructions and new account request forms.
When EpicCare Link is not an option for a patient's AHN medical records
If you can’t access your patient's AHN test results through the EpicCare Link platform, your patient will need to complete and submit the correct AHN Medical Records Release form, based on their state of residency. Support your patient’s request by downloading the correct medical records release form for them:
