Immigrant and Refugee Health

Caring for immigrants and refugees

There are more immigrants and refugees living in towns across Pennsylvania than ever before. At AHN, we want to make sure everyone gets the best health care possible — in a way they can understand. Through the AHN Center for Inclusion Health, we are working to meet the needs of these diverse communities.

Our Immigrant and Refugee Health Program is dedicated to providing outstanding health care to immigrants, refugees, and those who don't speak English or have limited proficiency. We focus on cultural understanding, language support, patient navigation, and removing barriers to ensure everyone has access to the care they need to live healthy lives.

Immigrant and refugee health services at AHN

At AHN, we work to provide outstanding health care to immigrants, refugees, and people who don't speak English as their first language. We do this by:

  • Helping our care teams understand different cultures. We teach our doctors, nurses, and other team members about different cultures, including specific traditions and expectations that could affect a patient's care. This helps our providers understand what people from other countries need and expect when they come to us for health care.
  • Making it easier to understand each other. We are working to make sure language, interpretation, and translation tools are at every hospital and physician office across our network. We tell our teams how to access these tools so all patients can make smart decisions about their care.
  • Removing barriers to care. We know that the medical system and hospitals in the U.S. can be confusing to navigate, especially if someone is new to the country. We work with local federally qualified health centers, Allegheny county, and community organizations that serve immigrants and refugees to help them find their way around and get the care they need.
