Advanced Trauma Life Support

Advanced Trauma Life Support

Back to Multidiscipline Courses

This Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) class is designed to teach interdisciplinary health care team members the principles of primary and secondary patient assessments in trauma situations and how to appropriately respond. Participants will learn how to manage acute life threatening conditions and will have the opportunity to demonstrate clinical and surgical skills in a simulated practicum. Upon completion of the course, participants are expected to be knowledgeable of the entire process from initial assessment to administering care and even to transferring the patient to another department or facility.

Learning Objectives

  • Demonstrate the concepts and principles of primary and secondary patient assessments
  • Establish management priorities in a trauma situation
  • Initiate primary and secondary management necessary within the golden hour for emergency management of acute life threatening conditions
  • Demonstrate skills which are often required in the initial assessment and in the treatment of patients with multiple injuries

Expected Outcomes

  • Rapidly and accurately assess a patient's condition
  • Resuscitate and stabilize patients according to priority
  • Determine if a patient's needs exceed a facility's and staff's resources and capabilities
  • Properly arrange for inter/intra facility transfer
  • Ensure optimal care is provided and that the level of care does not deteriorate at any time during the evaluation, resuscitation, or transfer process
