AHN Allegheny Valley President Named to List of Top 100 Women Leaders in Medicine

NATRONA HEIGHTS, PA. – Vicenta Gaspar-Yoo, MD, MBA, CHCQM, President of Allegheny Health Network’s (AHN) Allegheny Valley Hospital (AVH) has been named to The Top 100 Women Leaders in Medicine of 2021 by Women We Admire.

The 100 honorees are described by Women We Admire as exceptional individuals who are guiding healthcare delivery, leading changes and enhancing policy improvements nationwide. The evolving field of medicine requires a depth of knowledge, focus and collaboration from its leaders and each of this year’s awardees have demonstrated each of these attributes. Their commitment to the field impacts individuals daily, transforming outcomes for patients and families for the better. Dr. Gaspar-Yoo was recognized for breaking into new territories as the first female practicing physician president of an AHN hospital.

Dr. Gaspar-Yoo joined AHN in 2019, coming to AVH from University Hospital Health Systems (UH) in Cleveland, where she served as Chief Medical Officer for UH’s Bedford and Richmond Hospitals.

For more than 100 years, AVH has served as a vital source of high quality health care services for the people of Natrona Heights and surrounding communities. Since assuming her role as the hospital’s top leader, Dr. Gaspar-Yoo has helped direct the launch of a specialized traumatic brain injury rehabilitation program featuring in- and outpatient care, as well as a kidney stone program that employs a collaborative team approach to provide advanced 24/7 care for patients suffering from that painful condition.

Recently, AVH was recognized by the Hospital and Healthsystem Association of Pennsylvania (HAP) for its stellar performance ensuring patient safety. AVH is one of 17 hospitals to receive HAP’s Excellence in Patient Safety Recognition for 2021. Now in its third year, the program honors Pennsylvania’s top performing hospitals that have demonstrated low rates of healthcare-associated infections.

Dr. Gaspar-Yoo attended University of the Philippines for her undergraduate degree and received her M.D. degree from the University of the East College of Medicine in Manila, Philippines. She completed her post-graduate training with an internship at Crozer-Chester Medical Center near Philadelphia, and a Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation residency at UPMC Presbyterian. She later earned an MBA from Case Western Reserve University’s Weatherhead School of Management.

Prior to her work with University Hospitals Health System, she held several clinical and leadership posts at Firelands Regional Medical Center in Sandusky, Ohio, including Director of Clinical Innovation and Program Development, and President and Chair of the Physician-Hospital Organization.

“This recognition means a lot to me,” she said. “I’m honored to be in the company of 99 other remarkable women who share my vision for helping advance healthcare through better integration and coordination of services, more convenient community access to care, superior quality and greater affordability.”
