Allegheny Health Network’s Dr. Matthew Straka Named President of Allegheny County Medical Society Board of Directors

PITTSBURGH – Allegheny Health Network’s (AHN) Matthew Straka, MD, has been elected as President of the Allegheny County Medical Society (ACMS) Board of Directors. ACMS, established in 1865, is the leading professional association of physicians in Pennsylvania.

A Pittsburgh native, Dr. Straka is an otolaryngologist at AHN. He earned his medical degree at Georgetown University School of Medicine and completed a residency at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. He also earned a Master of Science in neurobiology and physiology from Northwestern University. He began his career working alongside his father, Dr. John Straka, in private practice.

In his new leadership role, Dr. Straka plans to continue enforcing the mission of ACMS to improve healthcare through education, advocacy, service and physician wellbeing. He says building a robust membership is a top priority.

“The issues we face as physicians continue to change as health care evolves. We need to ensure our medical society is here to support current needs, while also anticipating the things that will come our way in the future,” said Dr. Straka.

Since its inception, ACMS has sought to bring physicians together and collaborate with community organizations and governmental agencies to address a variety of issues and advance clinical knowledge.

The critical work of ACMS has only intensified in recent years due to the pandemic. ACMS Executive Director Sara Hussey is looking forward to an exciting and successful year.

“Dr. Straka has a passion for membership engagement and local physician advocacy. As ACMS President, he will work closely with the ACMS team and the executive committee on increasing the visibility of the medical society and its members,” said Hussey.

Dr. Straka will have the support of an energized Board of Directors, which includes a blend of seasoned physicians as well as several newly elected early career physicians.
