AHN West Penn Hospital appoints Anthony X. Baroni, DO, as Chief Medical Officer
PITTSBURGH – Allegheny Health Network (AHN) announced today that Anthony X. Baroni, DO, has been appointed chief medical officer of AHN West Penn Hospital in Pittsburgh’s Bloomfield neighborhood, effective immediately.
In this role, Dr. Baroni will lead the medical staff at West Penn Hospital (WPH) and help drive clinical operations to uphold the highest standards of patient care, quality and experience. He will also support the continued growth of the hospital’s clinical programs and services.
Dr. Baroni, a hospitalist, has been affiliated with AHN since 2001, when he joined AHN Allegheny General Hospital (AGH) and the former AHN Suburban Hospital as an attending physician. Over the last two decades, he has served in a variety of network and academic leadership roles, primarily at WPH.
Presently, he serves as the medical site director for the WPH Hospitalist Program, associate program director for the combined AGH and WPH Hospitalist Program, the medical director of the WPH Observation Unit, as an AHN and WPH Physician Advisor, and co-medical director of the WPH stroke program.
He is also an associate professor of Internal Medicine at Drexel University College of Medicine, which has a clinical campus at AHN, and a teaching attending physician at WPH and AGH.
Dr. Baroni earned his undergraduate pharmacy degree from the Duquesne University School of Pharmacy, and his degree in osteopathic medicine from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine.
He completed his residency in internal medicine at West Penn and is board-certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine.
“As a hospitalist, Dr. Baroni is deeply familiar with all aspects of clinical operations at West Penn, and he has experience working with — and leading — diverse, cross-disciplinary teams,” said Brian Johnson, MD, president of WPH. “He is a seasoned leader with a proven track record of clinical excellence and innovative leadership at West Penn, and he’ll be a strong advocate for the hospital’s clinical staff, its patients, and the many communities that West Penn serves.”
Located on Friendship Avenue in Pittsburgh, WPH has 356 beds; an emergency department; obstetric care and advanced gynecological surgery; a Level III neonatal intensive care unit; a burn trauma center; a renowned oncology clinic; and dozens of other services.
Additionally, West Penn’s one-of-a-kind Autoimmunity Institute, its Alexis Joy D’Achille Center for Perinatal Mental Health, and its Skin Cancer Center draw patients from across the state and country. WPH’s labor and delivery unit is one of the busiest in Pennsylvania, delivering around 4,000 babies a year.
