Akshay Khandelwal, MD, System Chair of AHN’s Department of Cardiovascular Medicine, Named to American College of Cardiology Board of Trustees

PITTSBURGH Akshay Khandelwal, MD, MBA, FACC, FSCAI, System Chair of Allegheny Health Network’s (AHN) Department of Cardiovascular Medicine, has been appointed to the American College of Cardiology (ACC) Board of Trustees as treasurer. The appointment was officially announced on Monday during ACC’s global conference, ACC.24, in Atlanta.

The trustee board is the centralized governing authority for the ACC and is responsible for overseeing decisions related to the College’s mission to transform care for cardiovascular disease and improve heart health around the world.

ACC is a global organization known for leading transformative cardiovascular care and improving heart health through clinical research, ongoing education and world-renowned publications. Founded in 1949, the organization maintains a longstanding legacy as a distinguished source of professional medical education credentialing physicians around the world, all of whom must meet stringent qualifications.

Dr. Khandelwal was appointed AHN’s System Chair in June 2023. He practices as an interventional cardiologist specializing in treating heart disease with catheter-based techniques. His areas of expertise include complex coronary interventions, such as angioplasty and stent procedures, we well as diagnostic cardiology.

Throughout his career, Dr. Khandelwal has been an active member of the clinical research and cardiovascular community across local, state and federal levels. He became a fellow of the ACC in 2007, and in 2019 was named Chair of the ACC Board of Governors and Secretary for the ACC Board of Trustees. In this role, he led 66 governors from chapters representing all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Canada, Mexico and the U.S. Uniformed Services.

“Dr. Khandelwal is an invaluable asset to the AHN Cardiovascular Institute, and it has been a privilege to witness his remarkable leadership skills and compassionate care delivery for his patients since his arrival to Allegheny Health Network,” said Stephen Bailey, MD, Chair of the AHN Cardiovascular Institute. “On behalf of the entire Institute, we’re thrilled he has been appointed to the board of directors of the American College of Cardiology. His research and clinical contributions to the field have been significant, and we’re beyond confident that he will serve the ACC with distinction.”

Dr. Khandelwal earned his medical degree from Bangalore University’s Sri Devaraj Urs Medical College in India, and he completed an internal medicine residency, chief residency, cardiology fellowship, and interventional cardiology fellowship at Henry Ford Hospital, formally joining the Henry Ford clinical staff as an attending physician thereafter.

In 2022, he also received a Physician Executive Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Tennessee’s Haslam College of Business. He is an associate professor at Wayne State University. Dr. Khandelwal is board-certified in cardiovascular disease and interventional cardiology by the American Board of Internal Medicine.
