Allegheny Health Network Names Jeffrey S. Mueller, MD, Chair in Radiology and Imaging Sciences
PITTSBURGH – Allegheny Health Network (AHN) has named Jeffrey S. Mueller, MD, as chair of the network’s Department of Radiology and Imaging Sciences.
Dr. Mueller, a board-certified radiologist, has held the chair role in an interim capacity throughout 2025. Over the years, he has held several leadership positions within the AHN Imaging Institute, including vice chair, operations officer, quality officer, division director of Cardiothoracic Imaging, and clinical director of the Lung Cancer Screening Program.
Specializing in cardiothoracic imaging, Dr. Mueller’s areas of clinical expertise include lung cancer screening, high-resolution chest CT, and cardiac CT, in addition to breast imaging, body imaging, and general radiology.
As chair of radiology, Dr. Mueller will lead a team of radiologists, technologists, nurses, and support staff providing vital imaging services, and supporting minimally invasive, image-guided procedures, across the AHN footprint.
Dr. Mueller succeeds Bethany Casagranda, DO, MBA, who had served as AHN’s radiology chair since 2017. She is now AHN’s Chief Medical Officer and president of the Allegheny Clinic, AHN’s physician organization.
“Dr. Mueller is a proven leader and exceptionally talented, innovative clinician,” Dr. Casagranda said. “Under his guidance, AHN’s Department of Radiology and Imaging Services will continue to flourish in providing advanced imaging care across the network.”
Dr. Mueller received his medical degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and completed his residency at the University of Minnesota Medical Center. Following his residency, he completed fellowships in cardiothoracic radiology from the University of Maryland Medical Center and in breast imaging at Allegheny General Hospital.
He is certified by the American Board of Radiology and holds a Cardiac MRI Certificate of Proficiency from the American College of Radiology.
"I am excited to build upon the strong foundation established by Dr. Casagranda and to continue to work alongside our talented team of clinicians to further enhance the quality and accessibility of our imaging services," said Dr. Mueller.
AHN and Highmark Health have invested approximately $400 million over the past several years to enhance the capabilities of the AHN Imaging Institute and expand patient care capacity across the region. Most recently, the network celebrated the completion and formal opening of a new, state-of-the-art $100 million 50,000-square-foot diagnostic imaging center at Allegheny General Hospital (AGH).
In 2024, AHN Allegheny Valley Hospital completed a $12 million renovation of its imaging and radiology department, and AHN Jefferson Hospital completed a $4.6 million renovation and expansion of its Breast Center and Outpatient Imaging Center.
The Imaging Institute also recently completed a four-year effort to achieve Diagnostic Imaging Centers of Excellence (DICOE) designation for its 36 imaging facilities. Considered the industry’s most distinguished achievement, DICOE designation identifies imaging programs that deliver the highest level of patient care, quality and radiation safety. Throughout Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Ohio and Delaware, AHN is the only health system to achieve this prestigious designation among adult imaging centers.
