Grief and Bereavement Support

AHN bereavement support

We with the Allegheny Health Network Healthcare @ Home Bereavement Program desire to provide support and guidance to anyone going through the grieving process. It is our heart to take on the journey of bereavement with you for up to 13 months following the death of a loved one.

How we help

Our program includes the following services:

  • Published mailings about grief and the grieving process
  • Information about what to expect when dealing with the loss of a loved one
  • Periodic phone calls or visits from the bereavement coordinators and chaplains
  • Available information about Support group meetings in your area.
  • Referral information for other counseling sources
  • Knowledge of additional grief resources
  • Memorial Services (Each year we have the privilege of hosting a Fall and Spring memorial service for our families. For our Fall Memorial Services, we will be collaborating alongside The Caring Place and their beautiful butterfly display called “illuminating Hope”.)

Volunteer information

Healthcare @ Home is looking for caring and compassionate individuals to become Hospice and Bereavement Volunteers!

Hospice Volunteers are the spirit of the Healthcare @ Home Hospice Team. You can assist our patients by bringing them comfort and the ability to have quality of life. You can help to meet the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of a person as they are nearing the end of their journey, as well as supporting their loved ones.

Bereavement Volunteers are the arms that hold a person in one of their deepest times of need. We all have experienced different types of grief, and you can use your experience to aide others. You can assist our team in giving care to families who have lost a loved one by a variety of different ways.

Here are just a few of the many ways both Hospice and Bereavement Volunteers can offer support:

  • Companionship/socialization
  • Respite for caregivers
  • Care Calls
  • Sharing a special talent or skill (Art, Music, Poetry..Etc.)
  • Administrative skills (Assembling mailings, informational packets, etc.)
  • Shopping/running errands
  • Meal Preparation
  • Reading
  • Gentle Touch Massage (*Must have Massage Therapy License)

Support groups information

We with AHN Bereavement department currently offer 4 support group options. Each group is free of charge and is ongoing throughout the year. You may join at any point in your grief journey. Our groups are for adults, but we are able to connect you with groups for families and children. If one of these groups is not close enough to home for you or if you are unable to attend do to time or mobility restrictions, we are able to connect you with other options. Q: What is bereavement?

Bereavement is the period after a loss during which grief is experienced and mourning occurs. The duration of bereavement can depend on different factors like, type of loss, type of relationship, attachment level, and the amount of preparation time anticipating the loss.

Who qualifies for bereavement services through AHN Healthcare @ Home?

Not only do we provide bereavement services for our Hospice Patient’s families, but we also provide services to anyone experiencing loss or grief. You do not have to have affiliation with AHN Healthcare @ Home in order to receive bereavement care.

Q: How do I receive bereavement care?

If you are not currently receiving Bereavement care, but wish to, please call a Bereavement Coordinator at (412) 439-1157 or contact Healthcare @ Home Customer Service at 1-888-599-7328.

Q: It has been over a year since my loved one has passed; can I still receive Bereavement Services?

Our Bereavement care team is designed to assist families within 13months of a loss. If you have never received bereavement services, but wish to, please call or Healthcare @ Home Customer Service at 1-888-599-7328 and ask for a Bereavement Coordinator. We can get you connected with bereavement support close to home.
