Transgender Health Care

If you are transgender or gender expansive, navigating the health care system may not always be easy or comfortable. You deserve a health care team that understands your needs and the unique challenges you face.

Through the Allegheny Health Network (AHN) Center for Inclusion Health, we are expanding our transgender medical and surgical services to better serve you. Our goal is for you to get the high quality care you need — no matter your gender identity or expression.

Transgender health care initiative: What is it?

We are working to offer outstanding health care to transgender people in a convenient and compassionate way. To meet that goal, we are training our care teams on the needs of transgender people while increasing our medical and surgical services.

Compassionate transgender health care providers

When you trust your care team, you are more likely to reach out when you have a health problem. At AHN, we are training our providers and front-line professionals so they provide health services for transgender people with the understanding and respect everyone deserves.

At some primary care offices, our behavioral health providers and social workers work side-by-side with physicians. Together, they can help people cope with common and complex transgender mental health issues and social challenges.

Research-backed transgender medical coverage policies and surgeries

We work closely with Highmark Health and Gateway Health to make sure health plans for transgender people cover research-backed services. AHN currently provides a wide range of primary care services and certain gender affirming surgeries at multiple locations.

Our surgeons have experience performing several types of surgery on transgender people, including:

  • Breast reduction
  • Breast augmentation
  • Chest reconstruction / masculinization
  • Orchiectomy (removal of testicles)
  • Hysterectomy (removal of uterus and ovaries)

We are committed to making it easier for you to get comprehensive medical and surgical services, in a setting close to home. We can also refer you to competent centers for genital reassignment surgery, when needed.
