Speech Therapy

Inpatient speech therapy

Speech language pathologists provide a wide range of services, mainly on an individual basis, but also as support for families. Speech services begin with an initial screening for communication and swallowing disorders. If the patient is identified as needing speech services, an order will be obtained by a physician. The patient will then be assessed and a plan of treatment will be created based on the individual needs of the patient. Family education, counseling, and progress towards goals will be given continuously throughout the recovery process.

Speech therapy provides treatment for the following disorders

  • Cognition - attention, memory, problem solving, executive functions
  • Speech – articulation, fluency, resonance, and voice disorders
  • Language – comprehension and expression in oral, written, graphic, and manual modalities, language processing, reading, and phonological awareness.
  • Swallowing – diet modifications, training and education regarding facilitative and compensatory strategies to reduce and/or eliminate aspiration, Modified Barium Swallow Studies (MBS) and Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation (NMES) for dysphagia therapy
