Lupus

Lupus Specialty Navigation

As the body's first line of defense, the immune system offers protection from simple and complex health threats.

The immune system produces antibodies that identify and destroy foreign invaders. In cases of autoimmune disease, however, antibodies can't distinguish between good and bad cells, which results in the destruction of healthy tissue, bones and joints.

Allegheny Health Network rheumatology specialists are national leaders in the diagnosis, treatment and research for patients with autoimmune diseases. Our physicians use a multidisciplinary approach to treat the complex symptoms of individuals living with lupus and autoimmune conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, Sjogren's syndrome and scleroderma. We strive to provide complete care, including management of related secondary conditions frequently associated with autoimmune disease, such as heart disease and diabetes.

Allegheny Health Network is proud to offer the Lupus Center of Excellence, serving lupus patients in the Pittsburgh region. The Center is dedicated to providing comprehensive care that improves the quality of life for lupus patients as we forge toward a cure. Combined, the Center's team of physicians, nurses, researchers and other professionals bring more than 150 years of expertise in the causes, symptoms and treatment of lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, and related autoimmune disorders to our region. The Center's research has yielded new testing methods that can lead to earlier and more accurate diagnosis of lupus and improve our ability to predict and treat flare-ups in lupus patients.
