Neuromuscular disorders affect the nerves that control voluntary muscles and the nerves cells (neurons) that communicate sensory information back to the brain. When the neurons become unhealthy or die, communication between the nervous system and muscles breaks down. As a result, muscles weaken, decrease in mass and can eventually waste away, which is called atrophy.

The conditions treated at the AHN Neuroscience Institute include:

  • Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (Lou Gehrig's Disease)
  • Charcot-Marie-Tooth and other inherited neurological diseases
  • Guillain-Barré syndrome
  • Muscular dystrophy
  • Myasthenia gravis
  • Myopathy (polymyositis, dermatomyositis, inclusion body myopathy)
  • Myositis
  • Peripheral nerve disorders
  • Spinal muscular atrophy
