Knees are divided into three compartments that may or may not be affected by osteoarthritis: the medial (inner), lateral (outer), and patellofemoral (top). If you have early to mid-stage osteoarthritis in just one or two compartments of the knee, you may be a candidate for Mako™ Partial Knee Resurfacing. If your condition is advanced, and all three compartments of your knee have osteoarthritis, you may need a Mako™ Total Knee Replacement.
This innovative treatment option targets only the damaged areas of your knee. Surgeons “resurface” the diseased part of the bone by removing it and replacing it with an implant. With help from the Mako™ Robotic Arm, they are able to spare the healthy bone and surrounding ligaments.
Doctors also use the Mako™ System to make a 3-D model of your bone anatomy before the procedure. This allows them to create a personalized surgical plan that they follow in the operating room.
Unlike more invasive procedures, Mako™ Partial Knee Resurfacing can often be performed through a smaller incision.
With more of your own natural bone and tissue, along with implants positioned according to your personalized plan, you end up with a more natural feeling knee. Also, patients who undergo Mako™ partial knee procedures may still be candidates for total knee replacement procedures later in life, if necessary.
A Mako™ Partial Knee Resurfacing can be performed as either an inpatient or an outpatient procedure. It depends on what your orthopedic surgeon determines is right for you. Hospital stays average from one to three days. In many cases, patients are permitted to walk soon after surgery, drive a car in the first few weeks, and return to normal daily activities shortly thereafter.
With a Mako™ Robotic-Arm Assisted Total Knee Replacement, surgeons remove the natural joint and replace it with an artificial implant. Mako™ Total Knee replacement is also minimally invasive and involves small incisions.
